Liturgy of the Hours - Sunday Antiphons

In the 1985 typical edition of the Liturgy of the Hours, the Congregation for Divine Worship added Antiphons for the Benedictus and the Magnificat that were specific for the Sunday in the 3 year cycle (A, B, or C). This included both Vespers I, II, and Lauds. However, in the ICEL version of the LotH that is used in the USA, this update was not incorporated into the version printed by Catholic Book Publishing Company - why, I have no idea.

My question is this, for those who know or for international forum members here on CAF: Are there any other vernacular translations of the Liturgia Horarum typical edition that have updated their Sunday antiphons?
 
It could be that whoever is responsible for the English version of the LOH just hasn’t gotten around to it yet.

It could also be that this same whoever is waiting for the final approval and promulgation of the new English version of the Missal, so the revised Collects can be incorporated into the LOH.

I am not sure what you mean. My copy of the LOTH has antiphons for the Magnificat and Benedictus that are specific to the Sunday. Are you saying there are three sets of antiphons for each year in the cycle? It could be that that the LOTH has not been updated since 1976 which is the copyright on my copy. After the Missal translation is finished ICEL will be working on the LOTH but don’t expect it to be promulgated in the near (or even distant) future.

I didn’t even think of that! You’ve just saved me $150! I was looking at getting a new set of the LotH, but if I’d moved on that right now, then my version would be obsolete in a couple of years and I’d have to re-buy.

I’m going to wait for the new missal. It looks like the NCCB estimates it being sent off to Rome for recognitio in 2010. That’s not too far away. I wonder how long it will take Catholic Book Publishing Company to update their books.

I’ll just stick with what I have for now. I’m so glad I asked.

Are you sure that antiphons were added, and not just rearranged?

In comparing Christian Prayer to the Mundelein psalter (which separates the antiphons by years A, B, and C) it appears that, for any given Sunday in ordinary time, the antiphon for EP I in Christian Prayer (and I assume the 4 vol. set) is the antiphon for all three major hours of the Sunday office, year A in the Mundelein Psalter (published 2007, so I assume up to date in this regard). The antiphon for the Benedictus in Christian Prayer is now used for year B, and the antiphon for year C is formerly the one for EP II.

In other words, it appears that there is a single Gospel antiphon for all three major hours of the Sunday Office. Perhaps this is the change you refer to. In which case - you already have all the antiphons you need, just arranged differently than you need them!

If I’m correct. since we are in year B, use the antiphon for the Benedictus for EP I and EP II as well to keep up with the change.

I suppose the thinking was, in the old system, the Gospel antiphon only corresponded to the Gospel reading of the day for one of the three hours. Now, it is a “constant” reminder throughout the day.

In the *Liturgia Horarum *there are 3 distinct antiphons for each of the 3 distinct offices. (ie: A total of 9 different antiphons for each Sunday)

Are the additional antiphons available on the web? If so they could be recited in Latin or translated if the OP is so inclined.

There are multiple antiphons for multiple days. Sorry, hermano, but I don’t have the time to translate. My suggestion:

Get this book:

Lauds and Vespers

It has the English and the Latin of the Ordinary, the Psalter, and the Proper of Seasons side by side for you to pray Lauds and Vespers each day. The only problem is if you run into a Saint’s feast day.

The only other problem is if you want to pray in community – *Lauds and Vespers *is not an approved translation for public liturgy (but it is fine in private devotion).

I’m content with what I have Christian Prayer and the Mundelein Psalter, which I realize from this thread are both incomplete albeit in different ways :rolleyes: My suggestion was for you, Windmill.

If you have the antiphons in the book you link to, and don’t want to translate them, why not just recite them in Latin, then proceed with the canticle in English?

P.S. Just found out here that they do correspond to the Gospel for the day, so it oughtn’t be too difficult to look at the Gospel in English and figure out just which part is being quoted if your Latin isn’t the best.

For that matter, is it “licit” (I hesitate to use the term) to use Christian Prayer or the 4-vol. English LOTH in community during those hours when those books have the outdated antiphons?

To my knowledge, those editions ((c) 1976 ? something like that?) use the most recently approved translation, so yes, their use is licit.

If/when a new translation is produced, I presume it will be specified whether and for how long previous editions remain licit (for public celebration), but I do not know that for sure.

My concern is more with the fact that those editions haven’t been updated with the new antiphons that are in the most recent typical editions, not with the translation per se. I suppose I am being overly scrupulous here.

In any case I have been inspired by this thread to translate the antiphons for my own use; your link, tee, will come in handy. Maybe I will post my translations when I finish.

Or if anyone feels like helping with the translation, we could divide up the work…😉

I only meant that if the Holy See wished to force the issue, it could, but it has not seemed to do so (or is only doing so with glacial speed).

My understanding is that a new translation, presumably including the additional antiphons, is planned, but that the translation of the Order of the Mass is to be completed first.

Funny, wouldn’t using your own unapproved translations of the antiphons when praying the Divine Office be even more certainly illicit than using an outdated but still approved translation?

In any case, to help one’s understanding when praying in Latin, Fr Stravinskas has a translation of all the antiphons in Lauds and Vespers. Why reinvent the wheel?

Only if they are used in community AFAIK. I plan to use them myself.
