This is a dumb question, since I should probably be able to find an answer on my own, but is the Liturgy of the Hours for use in the U.S. also being re-translated in the same way the OF mass just was?

Thanks :o

I have heard that it will happen but that it’s not going to be any time soon as it’s a very very big job indeed.

I do not have the link but I was reading that some parts will be changed in order to keep the unity and continuity between the Liturgy of the Hours and the Mass. The change will not be major and it will not require the acquisition of a new set of books, you will need some printouts/inserts and you will be able to go.

The collects, or prayers, have changed from what’s in the LoTH books but are the same as in the new Missal. If you have a newMmissal you can just use the prayer printed in the Missal.

I posted this in another thread the book Oremus - Let Us Pray has all the new collects in Latin and English.

In addition to the new collects I thought there was talk of using the Revised Grail Psalms, anybody else hear that?

Thanks the link that you give is the one that I was thinking of. 👍

Actually the prayers have not changed. You just now have the option of using the prayers that are in the Missal.

While this has been printed has there been a statement from the Church that it is acceptable for use in the LotH? I ask because there are some of us here that are canonically bound to pray the LotHs and we can not substitute non-approved material to meet that requirement.

Good question. Best I can do is point you to Father Z’s blog which mentions comments from the USCCBs Committee on Divine Worship’s latest newsletter.

In the Liturgy of the Hours (individually or communally), one can make use of the proper collects from the Roman Missal.

If you have access to that newsletter you can verify for yourself. If you are canonically bound you should probably check with the order you are bound for verification. I wouldn’t know how to answer.

And ByzCath’s comment is correct, using the new prayers are optional from what I understand, but you should check with your order.

All liturgical texts (Missal, Ritual, Pontifical, Ceremonial, Breviary/LoTH, etc.) are subject to the same translation principals, those of Liturgiam authenticam. The next edition of the LoTH, although I have no idea when that will be, will use more literal language as does the Missal now. And yes, there have been some whispers about a new one, although not anytime soon. I think it more likely that ICEL will wait until a new Latin edition comes out before they tackle the translation. I don’t really know for sure, though.

It will be translated soon.

If the antiphonary for the LOTH is any guide (the first volume came out in 2010), “soon” in Vatican parlance = 40 years, give or take a decade or two 😃
