What week are we in, 1 or 2 or 3 or 4, for the LOH. I keep forgetting. I wish there was an easy system for calculating it.

Sunday was the 45h “Sunday of Ordinary Time” so we started the week in week 4.

Wednesday we started Lent, which always starts with week 4 so that we will be in week 1 come Sunday, the 1st Sunday in Lent.

It is a coincidence that both portions of the week are the same this year. Other years we might have started on a different week, depending on where we were in ordinary time, but would have switched to week 4 on Wednesday.

The Proper of the Season will always tell you what week we’re in.

Hence Ash Wednesday says Wednesday of Psalter week IV.

We have however moved to vol.II - Lenten and Easter Season, correct? And will be using Week 4 in the Psalter ie page 1570.

Yes, that is if you have the 4 volume set. If you are using Christian Prayer you would be on a different page

Can someone suggest a few sources for me to find these books (LOH) ? I’m assuming TAN carries them but is this something usually carried in religious article stores - and if so, are there different versions pre and post-Conciliar? I’m interested in reviewing them before making the purchase.

post-Vatican II:

Shorter Christian Prayer: The Four-Week Psalter of the Liturgy of the Hours Containing Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer. Hardcover Pocket edition (July 1999) Catholic Book Pub Co., ISBN: 0899424082.

Christian Prayer. Hardcover Pocket edition, Catholic Book Pub Co., ISBN 0899424066.

These two books have been described as the “Readers Digest version of the Liturgy of the Hours”. They also have much more material, including music for some of the hymns. Both are also available in a Large Print edition.

The Liturgy of the Hours. Leather Bound (1975), Catholic Book Publishing Co., ISBN (for the 4-volume leather bound set): 0899424112.

This is the complete 4-volume set, with all the prayers and readings for all the Hours and all the Offices. Each volume contains appendices with additional material. It is, however, expensive to buy and awkward to use except for the truly committed. For all its intricacy, the general consensus is that it is easier to use than the old Breviary. There exists a short guide that lists all the appropriate pages for all the Hours for a given year.

The Divine Office. Leather Bound, Collins, ISBNs: 0007210892 (vol. I), 0007210906 (vol. II), 0007210914 (vol. III).

These three volumes comprise the English edition authorised for use in Australia, England & Wales, Ireland and Scotland.

There is also the Latin editio typica.

pre-Vatican II

It is possible also to acquire both modern and pre-Vatican II Latin Breviaries, the most common being reprints of the Dessain 1962 Breviarum Romanuim. The Elizabethan English (and Anglican) translation of the 1911 Breviary, the “Anglican Breviary” is also popular. The UK publisher Baronius Press is also working on an parallel English-Latin edition of the 1962 Breviarum Romanum, expected this year.

Thanks for all the info. Learning how to pray the LOH is proving very difficult for me, even with the Dodos book and my husband’s help. But I’ll keep on working at it.

It is possible to order:
Saint Joseph Guide for Christian Prayer: (The Liturgy of the Hours)

From Barnes and Noble Bookstores online. The cost is about $ 3.00 and it is certainly helpful for keeping track.

For how to pray the Liturgy of the Hours I found that The Liturgy of the Hours for Dodos by Madeline Pecora Nugent was invaluable.

As a supplement, I read *Psalms and Canticles for Morning Prayer *by John Paul II and *Psalms and Canticles for Evening Prayer * by John Paul II and Benedict XVI .

I also have an Ordo which tells me what feasts etc are being celebrated on what days and what week of the psalter it is. This book was very inexpensive and I bought it from a Catholic bookshop. You will need to buy one every year.
