Thank you Tee and Elizabeth for the Table of Contents.🙂

You are correct - it does actually say “night prayers” so I suppose I will order it, although I was not impressed at all with the quality of customer service provided by this company.

It does, but it is also the simplest and shortest section of the whole volume.

Since I own Christian Prayer, but have not prayed Night Prayer using the complete (4 vol.) Liturgy of the Hours, I am unable to compare the two.
I have all three. Night Prayer in the 4-volume, Christian Prayer, and Shorter Christian Prayer are identical and complete.

I understand that in the “complete” (4-volume) edition, the Office of Readings has a more robust selection of readings than in Christian Prayer. In another thread, I remarked that Christian Prayer does not contain the responsories for the Office of Readings - which I gather are in the mutlivolume set.

I have been informed in another thread that Night Prayer is identical in Christian Prayer and the complete edition.

So I wonder: how does Christian Prayer differ from the complete version with respect to Morning and Evening prayer?

Dear Erika - Congratulations! You’ve just entered the no-man’s-land of guessing games. When I first started praying the Hours, it was a breeze…I had no problem with the rubrics but I did start noticing some of the distorted theology I found in the translations. Pray something a hundred times and you might start believing it! And the Yahweh song in mine? Oi. Don’t get me started! Not being able to get a Latin one, I started using the Rosary. It is a comfort having a priest to give me permission to substitute the Rosary for the Hours I’m supposed to keep.

Peace,

Gail

To my knowledge, *Christian Prayer *reflects the complete hours for Morning and Evening Prayer (as well as Night Prayer, noted above). The abridgements are in the hours of Daytime Prayer and the Office of Readings.

The complete Daytime Prayer cycles through a 4-week Psalter and may be superceded in whole or in part on Proper celebrations. (*Christian Prayer *includes only a single week of DP and nothing proper)

To call the complete Office of Readings *more robust *is a bit of an understatement. In addition to the 4-week Psalter (included by Christian Prayer) there is a biblical and non-biblical reading (and their attendant responsories) for *every *day of the year, both Seasonal and Proper. Not every saint’s celebration includes a biblical reading, though the more solemn feasts do – And I believe each does include a non-biblical reading.

I could be mistaken. I mostly utilize *Christian Prayer *but I also use one volume of the *Liturgia Horarum *(the Latin editio typica).

(Oh, one other difference: In Latin the Gospel Canticle Antiphons on Sundays are related to the A-B-C cycle of Sunday Gospel readings – I do not know if the English *Liturgy of the Hours *does so. In *Christian Prayer *the Antiphons of the 3 Sunday offices, EPI, MP and EPII, include one each of the 3 years, so that one of those offices will always relate directly to the Gospel of the day)

You should have received a copy of the current Guide to the Liturgy of the Hours, when you purchased the 4 Vol set. I know that when I order them for our store, each set comes with the guide. In addition, when I ordered the Christian Prayer book in December, I received both 2008 and 2009 guide for each book.

They should have the guide where you bought the set.
