[Perhaps a good time to repeat this, because I mean it: **I don’t intend to come off condescending here
– If it seems that way, please understand that I have undoubtedly expressed myself poorly.]

No worries, mate, look how I came off in my post above.

Besides, look at the photo in your sig – you look anything but condescending! 😃

If it wasn’t for *The Divine Office For Dodos *by Madeline Pecora Nugent which another person has recommended my brievary would still be gathering dust on my book shelf.

I asked both our curate and our pastoral associate for help in saying the office but found their explanations confusing.

There is a little yearly guide for the LOTH that costs about $2 that tells you each day what pages for each hour.

Thanks so much for that link!! I already have it bookmarked!

God Bless!

You can use that site as your guide, but don’t use the text it self as it’s not approved by the Church. Use your books.

I echo the last post; get the St. Joseph’s guide for the Liturgy of the Hours. You can find it here.

I have had the beautiful experience of hearing the Liturgy of the Hours at two different cloistered monastaries (Trappist Monks and Benedictine Sisters). I have always wanted to pray the Liturgy of the Hours. This Christmas, my family surprised me with
the 4 volume Liturgy of the Hours. I am so very happy. I have prayed for this for many years.

It has been wonderful to learn how to pray this way. It is a beautiful way to pray Our Heavenly Father’s words. It is a process which I am a long, long way from perfecting. I feel that even though I live in a remote area and am not directly praying with a religious order, this is yet another of our Church’s magnificent treasures which, in addition to the Holy Mass and the Holy Rosary, beautifully unites Catholic Christians in prayer.

I love Jesus and Mary so much!

I am certain that the Holy Spirit, the Angels and the Saints are helping me as I learn, and that Jesus, in is mercy forgives me as I muddle through…I am not perfect but He is. I really am enjoying this experience.

God bless you…I love Catholic Answers forum, which, in addition to EWTN, AIRMARIA and other wonderful resources, has greatly encouraged, strengthened and enriched my walk with Jesus in my return home to the Catholic faith…it’s been four glorious and challenging years.

En Jesus y Maria…

Thank you so much for your beautiful post! I have been wanting to travel to Gethsemeni in Kentucky to pray with the Trappist Monks there. One of my closest friends has discerned a vocation for a few years, and has stayed there quite a bit and when his crazy holiday work schedule starts backing off, he is going to sit down and show me. For me, just reading about something does really give me the whole picture. I’ve always been a very kinesthetic learner, always have to be active for it to get past my thick skull :D. I guess I need to work with patience 😊 :o, though because I know he will be able to show me in the next week or so. It’s never really been my strong suit, although I do keep working on it. One day at a time, right?

God Bless!

I recently purchased the book entitled “The Divine Office for Dodos” and after reading it I decided to follow the author’s advise as to the company where I would purchase my new Breviary; but when I checked them out online I discovered that the one volume they sell does not contain “night prayers.”

I liked their version because it had a zippered cover, which is what I would like. I cannot afford to purchase the 4-vol. versions.

The author of the “Dodos” book implied that this company was the only company offering the “true” version of the DO, but it seems that they also publish the “Dodos” book, hence that recommendation.😦

I talked via telephone to this company and they were not helpful at all when I asked about why they do not include the “night” prayers in their version; they suggested I purchase the 4-vol. set. Another thing, they don’t have an 800 telephone number so my call for information was expensive.

I know that I can buy a “complete” one-volume Breviary from another Catholic company online but want advice from others who have purchased a new Breviary.🤷

Are you sure!? I have no personal knowledge of the dodos book, but Amazon indicates it is published by Catholic Book Publishing Corporation, which judging by other titles of that publisher at Amazon appears to be the same as what I am familiar with as Catholic Book Publishing Company?

CBP’s *Christian Prayer *includes Night Prayer, as does their 4-volume *Liturgy of the Hours *(I presume) and their *Shorter Christian Prayer *(I am led to understand).

:twocents: Personally my recommendation is for CPB’s works. They are widely used and well supported (I know they publish an *Ordo *annually). The other source of which I am aware is the Daughters of St Paul, which have a thing or two in their favor, but not as widely used nor supported (in my experience). (My bride owns that edition, if you have any questions) (Yes, it too includes Night Prayer)

I learned it first by going to universalis.com as well as ebreviary.com. I then got Christian Prayer and now have the full set of LOTH for about a year now. Learning it first online helped a lot when I finally got the books. Also the guide you can find here: stfrancisdesales.com/liturgy.php helped tremendously. You can also send for the guide, they are about 2$ and come out yearly. I pray all the hours, it’s wonderful. Keep hanging in there with it.

Ericka,

I don’t really have anything to add to the above posts - there’s some pretty good info there - except encouragement to you. I’ve been praying using CPB’s Christian Prayer for awhile now, and it has been a great enriching experience. My New Year’s resolution is to say Morning and Evening Prayer every day.
I could have written this myself :D… except I’ve only been going to any sort of Mass for about 4 years. But once I went to my first Latin Mass… I got the 1962 Missal, I just purchased a GREAT traditional Roman Hymnal, and am in the process of trying to learn medevial notation myself. If I only decided to take up diciplines that I understood, I would still be Presbyterian, I wouldn’t know how to read modern music notation, I wouldn’t be able to sing or play the handful of instrument that I can, I would have absolutely no knowledge of Psychology, I wouldn’t know how to make a knotted chord rosary… etc, etc… ad nauseum. It’s in pushing myself to understand things I don’t know anything about that has lead to my greatest personal and spiritual growth.

God Bless!

This is very well said! I have been pushing my limits too - learning how to chant with the choir at the EF masses I assist at. This has led me to order the Mundelein Psalter (LOTH in English adapted for chant). I am looking forward to learning this new way for me to pray in this (adapted) ancient tradition.

I find this quite hard to believe, since Dodos and Christian Prayer (the one-volume Liturgy of the Hours) are published by Catholic Book Publishing Company. Christian Prayer DOES have Night Prayer.

What is the title of the book you ordered?

Well, contrary to what posters have said in response to my query, Catholic Publishing is the company I talked with on the telephone. I called them because when I checked their website and looked up the one-volume Breviary its description did not show the “night” prayers.

That is why I called to talk with someone in person thinking that perhaps it was a mistake in the description.

I talked with two people because I could not get accurate information from the first person; the second person assured me that the one-volume Breviary does NOT HAVE THE NIGHT PRAYERS, as the description indicates it does not.

So, no matter how reliable everyone seems to think they are, that is the information they gave to me and is indicated on their web site.🤷

Well all I can say is: Whoever answers the phones isn’t familiar with the product. 🤷

This is the one you are looking at, yes? What do you think they fill 2080(!) pages with? Click on VIEW INTERIOR PAGES and you will see “Night Prayer” listed right at the bottom of the first page of the table of contents (it spans pages 1034-1057).

It is a fine and useful book (as long as you do not have your heart set on the complete Office of Readings nor Daytime Prayer).

Christian Prayer DOES have Night Prayer.
It does, but it is also the simplest and shortest section of the whole volume.

Since I own Christian Prayer, but have not prayed Night Prayer using the complete (4 vol.) Liturgy of the Hours, I am unable to compare the two.

Night Prayer in Christian Prayer is very basic compared to Morning and Evening prayer; it is basically invariant (except that the responsory is omitted during the octave of Easter) and follows a one week cycle of psalms and readings.

What might be missing is the Office of Readings (formerly Matins), which takes up a good part of the four volumes. T his is considered a “night prayer” in some circles because traditionally it is what religious used to rise in the middle of the night to recite.

Could they have been referring to the Shorter Christian Prayer? I believe that does not have the Night Prayers. 🤷
Ordering can be confusing even with the simplest orders. Sorry you had to go through all that.
At this link you will find the table of contents of Christian Prayer at the bottom you will find the Night Prayer is listed.

No, that also includes Night Prayer. The TOC is viewable here.

Thanks Tee, sorry about that I wasn’t sure that’s why I said I believe which turns out to be wrong. sorry too that I did not see that you already provided a Table of Contents in your other post. I didn’t mean to do that if someone else had already my skimming skills leave something to be desired.

I think that the phone folks are just quoting off the same descriptions that we read.
