The biggest difference between the one volume, Prayer fo Christians, and the four volume, Liturgy of the Hours (LOH), is the much variety of readings (psalms, Old & New testament, and readings from the saints and church fathers and such) in the LOH. The LOH is much more rich do to this.

Also don’t let anyone deter you from the four volume set because of the price; just buy one volume at a time (the one being used in the season you start using it - for example the season of Advent you start with volume one) that way you spread the cost out. For a fee bucks I advise you to get the guide, it is good for one year and it tells you what readings and psalms etc. are used for each day and hour. It will help you learn how to use the LOH.

we have discussed the merits of the various formats available for LOTH on several past threads, this would be the fastest way for you to get good answers. If you are just starting out I strongly recommend Shorter Christian Prayer, use it through one entire liturgical year until you get familiar with the 4 week psalm cycle. When you have formed the habit of daily prayer and wish to have more of the specific prayers and readings for the seasons and feasts, the Office of Readings etc., then consider the more comprehensive books. They are expensive, and you should not invest unless and until this prayer has become a daily habit for you. The threads mentioned also give links for on-line resources, which are a great money saver and great way to learn.

Has anyone read the book “How to Pray the Liturgy of the Hours” by Judith Kubicki? Is it any good?

What’s the best method for learning to pray the Hours? Should I read a book on how to pray the Hours then ask a priest to show me or should I just ask a priest?
 
Also, I just wanted to add that I have “The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary”. Would anyone recommend reading that for a week to see if I like the Liturgy of the Hours format?
 
I was on this site the other day, and it looks like it will no longer be free? Is there a truly equivalent place out there to replace it? I haven’t noticed that universalis has all the info, just some of it. They don’t have the intercessions, etc.

Yes, I noticed that too. I used to use it to check that I was interpreting the instructions and guide correctly. I don’t check so much now, mainly just use the book, but I did like to check from time to time.

I actually just read through the Ordinary of the Liturgy of the Hours 4 volume set. It is pretty clear on how to pray it. If you have this set, that is a good way to learn it. This link offers somewhat of a similar explanaition as the book offers.

It is the same for evening prayer. Look around and see if you can find a night prayer for Saturday night, or is it only Sun through Fri? It is because the Saturday night is the eve before a feast (Sunday is a feast). So on Saturday night you do what is entitled Sunday evening/night number 1. And when it is actually Sunday night, you do what is entitled Sunday evening/night number 2.
