i’m resurrecting this thread to ask a question.

Where can one find the UK Liturgy of the Hours for purchasing?

I recently sold my 4-Vol. LotH (Cath.Bk.Pub.) and have been trying the Liturgia Horarum (digital form on my Palm Pilot). However, while I am not yet fluent in Latin, it is hard to pray while I go fumbling through my Latin dictionary.
Try here. Wish I knew about it before my wife bought me the US set. I do not like the US translation, and the Te Deum is ungrammatical!

From this link, click on Liturgical Books on the right.

Thank you very much!

I have another question. There is probably only one or two people on this whole forum who could answer such a specific question, but it’s worth a try.

For those Americans who have tried the Liturgy of the Hours (ICEL), the Liturgia Horarum, and the British Divine Office, which one do you prefer, and why?

I have had six years of Latin, and I used the Latin breviary for two years when I was in a Junior Seminary program, but I personally prefer English because I understand it better. (I do prefer the Latin Mass, tho). And as noted, I prefer the British to the American translation.

At the bottom of this document, you can compare the UK and US versions of popular prayers and see for yourself.

Amongst my goodies is BENEDICTINE DAILY PRAYER: A Short Breviary.

Short? It’s over 2000 pages.

It is a simplification of the Office as celebrated at St. John’s Archabbey OSB.

It allows for Terce, Sext, and None. AS well, the traditional names Vigils, Lauds, Vespers, and Compline are used.

The Psalter use for Lauds through Compline is according to the Holy Rule of St. Benedict.

And wonder of wonders, the TRADITIONAL Western Office hymns are used.

While it is not an officially approved version of the Office, it is in my opinion better than the American recension of the Liturgy of the Hours and its one-volume abbreviations.

PKinsale,

Your post above mentioning 6 years of Latin and still preferring the English Divine Office is very helpful to me. I am a busy person, and was hoping to be able to pray the Liturgia Horarum after a year or two. I will look at the British Divine Office instead.

Now, to decide if the 1-volume Daily Prayer or the 3-volume Divine Office is best…

My Latin was 20-odd years ago, and while I have retained much, I don’t want have to pull out a dictionary to translate the vocab I have lost.

I agree that it is not very prayerful to be flipping through a dictionary.

Does anyone know if the most recent Divine Office is still different from the ICEL Liturgy of the Hours? I was PM’ed by someone saying they may be pretty similar.

While the 4 vol US LOTH uses the NAB (I think), the 3 vol UK one draws from the JB, 1973 RSV, Knox Bible, New English Bible and GNB for the scripture text. The Psalms are from the Grail Translation, while the Canticles are from either the Grail or the RSV. The 3 Gospel Canticles are also from the Grail Translation.

So, the 2002 UK edition is different? Better? I think Puzzleannie had the 1975 edition. I’m just curious if, for private devotion, one would recommend the current UK Divine Office over the LotH. There is a substantial price difference, but I’d be willing to pay it if it was worth it. If they are almost the exact same, then I wouldn’t bother.

The UK edition from what I know is substantially better than the US edition. Actually the UK edition was reprinted in 2006. This edition would contain an updated Liturgical Calendar as well as various Prayers of New Saints added to the Calendar. I’m not sure however if its worth the price difference.

Also, praying the Divine Office is not a private devotion. The Divine Office is a public prayer of the Church.

Thanks for the information! I know the Divine Office is the public prayer of the Church, I guess what I meant was that since it is not approved for the US, I couldn’t use it in official public worship here. It would merely be for my own private use. I could unite my prayers with the Brits, though 👍
