Does anyone know if the there will be a re-translation of the Liturgy of the Hours in English after the new translation of the missal is released?
It is a complete translation affecting all parts- the responses and all the prayers.I am a Secular Carmelite and have been praying the Divine Office for many years. I try to keep up with the information coming out of the Vatican and have not heard anything about ‘re-translating’ the Liturgy of the Hours. After some thought on this I can’t see why there would be a need for a different translation. The changes in the Roman Missal are to be clearer translations from the Latin in only a few of the responses during Holy Mass.
The antiphons, the intercessions, the Second Reading, the responsories, the prayers and even the canticles are all translations. The Liturgy of the Hours translation is currently right from the New American Bible, and as I’m sure your aware mainly just the Psalms, Canticles and readings directly from scripture. The only thing I could imagine someone might look at to change would be the Antiphones, but on a whole, their pretty close to the Latin.
If I had a personal preference I’d change the English over to the RSVCE Bible … but that just me.![]()
I’ve heard from several sources that it will be, but that it is currently on the back burner due to the new translation of the missal.Does anyone know if the there will be a re-translation of the Liturgy of the Hours in English after the new translation of the missal is released?
Get the set. Pray the Hours. It is a wonderful devotion. Thanks for the quick responses. I was pondering whether to by the four volume set…and I thought that if the LOTH was going to be re-translated, I probably should wait.
Do you mean to say that the Psalms in the 4-volume LOTH are from the NAB? Because after discussing just that question on these boards, I was assured that was not the case and that has proven accurate. The Psalms are The Grail (England) version of 1963.The Liturgy of the Hours translation is currently right from the New American Bible, and as I’m sure your aware mainly just the Psalms, Canticles and readings directly from scripture. The only thing I could imagine someone might look at to change would be the Antiphones, but on a whole, their pretty close to the Latin.
For the record.I do not think the NAB was used for the Psalms or other canticles in the 4 volume LOTH, or the one-volume Christian Prayer or Shorter Christian Prayer. I think it was a separate translation. I say this because some of the psalms and canticles do seem to be different. But I am relying on my memory of the text, I have not made an actual comparison.
Wow! Cool. Thank you, Porthos11!For the record.
The 4-volume LOTH translation set goes thusly:
Psalms: 1963 Grail except Psalm 95.
Psalm 95: ICEL
Canticles (with a few exceptions): 1970 NAB
Canticle of the Lamb: ICEL
Benedictus, Magnificat, Nunc Dimittis: ICET
Scripture readings: 1970 NAB
So no, the NAB isn’t used throughout; only for readings and Canticles.
