In our diocesan paper there was an article which had the statement that “the Liturgy of the Word is equal in importance to the Liturgy of the Eucharist.”
This statement seems quite off to me given that Lumen Gentium refers to the Eucharist as “the source and summit of the Christian life.”
Paragraph 1325 of the Catechism says “The Eucharist is the efficacious sign and sublime cause of that communion in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which the Church is kept in being. It is the culmination both of God’s action sanctifying the world in Christ and of the worship men offer to Christ and through him to the Father in the Holy Spirit.”
Further, John chapter 6 speaks of the necessity of the Eucharist for eternal life.
In no way does this denigrate the Liturgy of the Word as it is the proclamation of the inerrant Word of God, but I think both Scripture and our Sacred Tradition have been pretty clear on the importance of the Eucharist.
Am I wrong to take issue with this? Is the equality of the Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist something the Church has taught?
