In the eyes of the Church, what is more important or of higher significance in the Mass, the Liturgy of the Word or the Liturgy of the Eucharist, or are they equal? In the parish that I attend, and even in many threads on this site, it seems like the Eucharist is paramount. For example, our parish priests’ homilies are increasingly diluted and devoid of anything based on the readings for the Mass. I agree with the Eucharist’s significance given that it is truly the body and blood of Christ, but I am concerned about this perception and what I perceive to be many Catholics’ ignorance of Scripture. As St. Jerome said, if you don’t know Scripture, you cannot know Christ. Curious on the Church’s position and what others’ perception is in their parishes? Thank you.
