I read in our bulletin tonight that the “All Liturgy of The Word will be in recess from December 26th until it resumes on January 6th”. I have no idea what this means. I thought that “The Liturgy of The Word” was a part of The Mass.

Could someone help me please and explain to me what “Liturgy of The Word” actually is and what the bulletin may be actually saying. The lady who drives me home from Mass had no idea either and nothing was said at Mass about the notice.

Confused!..but Happy Christmas to all and to yours anyway…barb:)

I suspect this is an error by your parish office staff. It might be referring to the “breaking open the Word” which is done by the catechumens and RCIA leader after they are dismissed during one of the Masses (after the Liturgy of the Word during Mass).

Thank you. I thought it had to be a mistake and that perhaps it should have read “Childrens’ Liturgy of The Word”, which is what we normally call here (Sth.Aust) “breaking open the Word” - although I am pretty sure I have heard that term as well too. The lady who drives me home thought it may mean “Communion Services”…so I think for those that do read the bulletin, there is going to be some confusion around the parish and naught unusual really.

Thank you again!👍

The lady who drove you home had it right. A “Communion service” is also called “Liturgy of the Word with Communion”. Unless your parish is exceptional, the breaking open of the Word for those in RCIA & the Children’s Liturgy of the Word only takes place on Sundays so they wouldn’t have bothered including weekdays in the dates.

I think it probably means the daily LOW with communion your parish has on weekdays with no scheduled Mass.

There is something wrong because insofar as I know (I am dependant on lifts to get to the parish) we do not have any Communion also termed Eucharistic Services during the week at all nor have had for some time. Nor has there been any times for Eucharistic Services (or whatever the term may be) in our bulletins, and I jsut double checked, during the week for quite a while now since they are, to my knowledge, suspended. Can these also be called Liturgy of The Word with communion. It is all very confusing!!!:o I thought that Liturgy of The Word was a term only used in connection with Mass? That Mass was divided into two parts: Liturgy of The Word and Liturgy of The Eucharist? (questions).

To further thicken the plot, I have just (more or less) had feedback that apparently our Deacon holds Vespers on some days and that it is to this that reference is made in the notice using the term “Liturgy of The Word” as my feedback tells me our deacon uses this term re these meetings for Vespers???http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/10/10_1_11.gif I think she may be confused with “Liturgy of The Hours” which term our deacon could have used.

Ours is an elderly parish in the main and most of us oldies have a hard time keeping up with both secular and Church news and information…as the brain gets older it will only store so much before confusion sets in…and there is a massive amount of information coming out of The Church alone! We have politically correct terminology everywhere one ‘steps’…and one must step most gingerly as on very thin ice over deep waters, or have a ton of bricks rush down upon one for being ‘politically incorrect’
For example our government housing authority has recently changed its name…and I got pulled up well and truly by an employee for using the old name!!!🤷

The full bulletin notice is as follows:

“Please Note: All Liturgy of The Word will be in recesss from December 26th until it resumes on 5th. January 2009.
As there will be NO Liturgy in the parish on New Years Day, below are Mass times in neighbouring parishes…”

And yes, we only have Children’s Liturgy during Sunday Mass.

I am being picked up Saturday for Vigil Mass, so I can sort it all out then, although I am hoping that something will be said by Father immediately after Mass from the pulpit. I had a laugh a few weeks ago from our bulletin which was giving a little homily which concluded with a typo… "and He also said “thou shalt covet” (it should have read, “thou shalt not covet”).

When I find out what is going on for real, I will report back to this thread and I probably wont know for sure until after Mass this coming Saturday evening.

We have a group that prays the “Liturgy of Hours” every morning. So one day a week, we have “Liturgy of the Word” with Exposition and benediction whenever we do not have a priest to celebrate Mass which is about one day a week. The deacon reads the readings of the day and gives a short homily, then we have benediction.

Our previous pastor did away with “Communion Services” years ago. It had something to do with what he had seen happening in priestless parishes that had Communion Services quite often. A priest was assigned to offer Mass on the weekend. Our pastor thought that many seemed to think they were doing just fine without a priest. He thought that it was good for us to have a sense of loss on those days that we did not have a priest for one day a week. So he instructed the deacon to lead us in Morning Prayer with Exposition and benediction. (However, ever since the group started the daily Liturgy of Hours, we have gone to have the Liturgy of the Word with benediction on the pastor’s day off)

Yes

Yes, Mass is divided into 2 parts, Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist but a Liturgy of the Word can be celebrated on its own, with or without Communion. A mixed marriage is usually celebrated within a Liturgy of the Word.

That probably explains it. Someone got “Liturgy of the Word” and “Liturgy of the Hours” mixed up. I can only assume it wasn’t the Deacon.

It will all sort itself out after Mass Saturday evening I know. Probably Father or our commentator will clear it all up immediately after Mass when bulletin notices are addressed in part.

Thank you to all who have shared in this thread. I have learnt things!👍 …always a happy experience.

Happy Christmas to you and to yours…Barb:)

definitely raise the question with the priest or deacon, if only because they will be so delighted that somebody actually reads the bulletin

How true! Sometimes I feel like deliberately putting in something incredibly stupid just to see if anyone will notice.

:rotfl:…Not necessarily so!!! … But I’ll keep family skeletons in the closet:D

Desr frind in Christ,

GOSH, I hope your right:thumbsup:

As our Parish Leader for RCIA “Breaking Open The Word,” I’d feel like a real dummy if there were some sort of authorized suspension. There is not, that I know of:)

God bless,
PJM m.c.

For my part, I am quite convinced there has been some sort of human error since I know our office and typing staff have heavy workloads. I think probably someone heard “Liturgy of The Hours” and unthinkingly typed “Liturgy of The Word” which is very easily done - I have made such silly errors myself at times.

It all had me confused until someone told me that our Deacon sometimes calls Vespers “Liturgy of The Word” when actually she should have said “Liturgy of The Hours” which I can understand our Deacon saying. The Church in many ways for the very simple (our Deacon by the way is a great guy and totally with it in all matters Catholic in a traditional sense) has become far too complex to stay in touch with in some aspects and it is ludicrous to expect simple hearted people to do so as wonderfully Catholics devoted to Christ and His Gospel and at cost as so very many, if not indeed all, are. Too often, however, and it really sends me off my tree, the ‘intellectuals’ in our midst will sneer and condescendingly and patronizingly (deliberately so) to correct what a simple hearted soul has stated … the objective of such ‘intellectuals’ is egotistical in nature and all about self egotisitcally, and not at all about truth, charity, insight and understanding, empathy and plain courtesy and decency!!! (as I said, sends me off my tree:D )

I am quite confident that some sort of entirely human error only has occurred - well at least I am confident of this now, not when I posted my opening post. I was quite confused. Nothing dramatic nor disturbing:thumbsup:

It shall all sort itself out tonight after Mass I am convinced:thumbsup: …Barb:)

It usually means you won’t have Masses in your parish for the given period, but that someone will lead a Liturgy with the Readings for the day, with Communion included.

It may mean the the daily “Liturgy of the Word, with the distribution of Communion outside of Mass” which may (incorrectly) take place on a daily basis, in place of daily Mass.

Hi Brother Rich…you obviously have missed my earlier post (easy to do!👍 ) where I stated that we do not have Eucharistic or Communion Services, or Liturgy of The Word with Holy Communion, in our parish during the week nor have had for some time.
It will be interesting to find out what the bulletin did mean while I am very happily confident it is a simple case of human error and likely a typing error - whereas when I first posted I thought perhaps I was more out of touch than I realized and to some degreee I was.

.

Solved the mystery and the greater majority of you were quite correct! It is the Liturgy of The Word with Communion which we now have again three days weekly and I am informed has been so for a while now:o

Being dependant on a lift to and from Mass and for quite a while unable to find one with problems with buses, I could not get to Mass at allf in our parish, hence missed out on much for a while.

Now this is the reason and no excuse I know! Our deacon who is more or less relatively new has done a great job with our bulletin and changed things around, so that this 64yr old 29 year long parishioner was long used to seeing certain things in certain places…and could see without seeing - very much as I can sometimes hear without hearing. Need I say more.

All my fault entirely! Thank you for trying and sorry for trying you.:o

It is proper to have a “Liturgy of the Word” without Holy Communion on a daily basis. I generally read the first post and them post my answer, I don’t read through all of the posts in a thread only the original and those addressed to me…
