One of the things that I have always found great about the Catholic mass (since I joined the Church as an adult) is having four bible readings. I know a lot here want to bring more reverance back to the eucharist, and I’ve no beef with that. I would only ask all to consider whether there is a way to promore both greater reverance for the Eucharist **and **the increased attention paid to Holy Scripture in the NO.

Right off the top of my head I can think of two ways for Catholics to have more reverence for scripture during the mass.

The first would be to actually read scripture outside of mass. That way people can familiarize themselves with all aspects of scripture, both Old and New Testaments. That would help make scripture seem more understandable and approachable and if that can be done it can also be applied more easily to one’s life and situation.

The other thing would be if the Sunday readings were incorporated more into the priest’s homily. I’ve been to a number of churches where the Sunday readings aren’t really mentioned and their lessons are only tangentially related to the message presented in the homily. Hearing the scriptures actually preached, I think, would help the hearers to actually grow closer to scripture also.
