Are there any litugy planning folks out there in this wonderful forum?

Our parish Worship Commission is trying to form a committee for Liturgy Planning - not just the music but other parts of the Mass.

My question - what websites or print materials are reliable and orthodox? Are there publishers we should we shy away from?

Thanks and God bless your day!

Usually I cringe when I read or hear “Liturgy Planning.” My instinctive reaction is to assume that liturgical planners intend to change the Mass to suit themselves.

That said, an excellent resource for ensuring that the Mass is properly celebrated is “Ceremonies of the Modern Roman Rite” by Msgr. Peter J. Elliot. It is published by Ignatius Press, and the ISBN is 0-89870-526-6. You can’t go wrong with this book.

Reliable and orthodox? Try the General Instruction for the Roman Missal (GIRM), Redemptionis Sacramentum, the Vatican II document on the Liturgy (sorry I forget the name). You can download them all from the library at EWTN online.

I recall reading that Liturgy Training Publications were the ones who spread the idea that Jesus didn’t really multiply the loaves and fishes - He just got the people to share. I might want to avoid their stuff.

I hope you’re not looking for innovations. There’s not much wiggle room in authentic liturgy. I hope you just want to get everybody on the same page, doing their jobs with dignity and obedience to the liturgical norms. Then choose some good music and decorate the church in a worthy and beautiful way, and you’re done!

Most liturgists, even those who are non-Catholic object to the term “liturgy planning” and perfer to use “liturgical preparation” This indicates that the planning has already been done for us in the form of written liturgy, ritual and rubrics. The focus of good liturgy should always be on God-centered worship. This precludes changes made to suit individual desires and egotisticaly motivated aditions and deleations that tend to interfere with the authentic liturgical experience we all seek.

Fr. Austin Flemming, a known liturgist whose parish is located in Concord, MA, likenings liturgical planning to an art form. He says that proper preparation will result in a smooth liturgy that highten the the response to every member of the assembly.

Good liturgy should maintain the tradition of liturgical practice through the centuries, while at the same time, be relevant to contemporary parish life. It is a fine line to tread.

Just avoid those wokrshops that will fill you with cute little ideas like putting sand in the holy water fonts during Lent - dancing, etc.

Follow the GIRM, the Sacramentary and Redemptionis Sacramentum to the letter. Try just using some traditional Catholic Hymns and see how much more participation you will get. Consider using chant for the Kyrie, Sanctus, Agnus Dei and Gloria. Use the Readings, Psalms and responses given in the Missal. Do all this and you will be liturgically correct and have a beautiful Mass. (and ask your priest to please not hold hands with any Altar servers;) )

Buy Jimmy Akin’s Mass Confusion. It’ll help solve some problems (hopefully) before they happen.
