Rom12:1

What does it mean to make your body a living sacrifice?

Christ says that the Mosaic law that guided God’s people is finished, in (Rom10:4) so, the apostle explains how Christians don’t sacrifice animals according to the law, but sacrifice ourself for the sake of Christ and his body (believers). We are given the gift of justification through faith and have to express this when relating to one another.

Then he talks about the gifts God gives. Each of us have some gift that can be used for the benefit of the community. When we realize that we are a sacrifice, we realize the gifts aren’t for ourself. Also having the gift isn’t a sign of how faithful we are, but a challenge to use it faithfully.

Hope that helps and wasn’t to long winded. 🙂

To not follow our sinful flesh nature but to sacrifice that to follow the Spirit instead.

Example: My sinful nature did not want to go to a parade today to see my FIL march:o

I went with my MIL and children and did the right thing.👍

I sacrifice myself every time I want to verbally attack my husband and I ask the HS to keep my mouth shut. I need to be extra mindful of this because my hubby is not saved and I have to show him Christ through my behavior.👍
[SIGN]IT IS SO HARD:( [/SIGN]

Rom12:1

Haydock Commentary:

Romans 12:1. With this chapter St. Paul begins his second part, in which he gives us most excellent lessons of morality, after which every Christian should aim to form his life, and thus resemble Jesus Christ and his saints. (Haydock) — That you present your bodies a living sacrifice. And how must this be done? says St. Chrysostom, hom. xx. Let the eye abstain from sinful looks and glances, and it is a sacrifice; the tongue from speaking ill, and it is a sacrifice, &c. — Your reasonable service, or worship,[1] from you; nothing being more reasonable, than for men to serve God with their souls and bodies, &c. (Witham)

If I were making my body a living sacrifice would it be all right to desire the newest Mercedes or a million dollar home?

What is your opinion, and how is that related to the home or car that a person owns.

Is it more spiritual to drive a Beetle or Focus or Rio and live in a trailer park or ghetto?

If someone works hard and makes money and is wealthy, does that make them less of a faithful follower of Christ?

What’s your point here MLP?

No point just a question to ponder.
If I am making a living sacrifice how much does wordly desire figure into the mix.
I know in my own walk I’ve had all those trappings of success.
The more I had the more I wanted.Cars, boats, houses, Rolex, and all the rest.
In the end it brings to mind eccl 12:13-14.

Well of course we “want” nice things. The question is what we do with our “wants” — whether we are enslaved by them or subjugate them to God’s will. As St Thomas Aquinas wrote, “God alone satisfies.”

There’s not much to ponder for me then. If I ever get rich… I’ll deal with it then. I know what I need to live.🤷

If you’re really interested in this get a good book on the life of St. Francis of Assisi, there are several around including one by G.K. Chesterton.

How about getting drunk or lusting after someone?

Would there be any room for this behavior in a person who is making his life a living sacrifice?

If you were 'all about your Father’s business", what would your life look like?

Would it be any different that it is now?

mislolipops, you ask a very interesting question.

Since we are to act as Christ did (to put on Christ), we must be able to work for the things He wants us to do according to His will. This could even mean suffering since He did that for us also.

Since we are no longer of this world by Baptism and are now a child of God, our new home is not this earthly life. The living sacrifice to me is to live on earth even though we are not to be part of it spiritually. This means that we have to judge all possessions by whether or not it promotes our relation to Christ or not. Sacrificing earthly pleasure for spiritual rewards seems to be the theme of Romans 12:1 for me.

Would you be concerned for finding a spouse if you didn’t already have one?

In other words would having a family outweigh ‘being about your Father’s business?’
Not that having a family is sinful but it would distract from totally sacrificing for the Father.

As far as desiring wealth, lust, and getting drunk I feel pretty certain that no one will be able to stand in the presence of God and look at Him face to face with any of these desires in our hearts. If we are truly following Christ then we can desire nothing but Him, and to be obedient to His will. We must be perfectly conformed to His will. There can be no room in our hearts for anything but Him, and without it we will never see Him face to face. If we love God with all our hearts, mind, strength, and soul, and love out neighbors as He loves us then there should be absolutely no room in us for anything but Jesus in our hearts

I assume you are at this level of commitment and praying the rosary brings you closer?

We cannot offer anything to God that is unholy.

If a person is living up to the commandments which the Lord has given us, and not commit any serious sin, he can offer his body as a living sacrifice.
If you were 'all about your Father’s business", what would your life look like?
I offer him everything. I even offer my every breath that I take, and everything that I can do. While keeping in mind not to offend the Lord.
Would it be any different that it is now?
Here is a good prayer:

Father, we offer you today all our thoughts, words, and actions, all our suffering and disappointments, and all our joys. And we unite our lives with that of your Beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

That is awesome Manny praise God.
I like when you answer from the heart.
The copy and paste answers sometimes don’t cut it for me.

How am I supposed to account for someone else’s behavior?

What are trying to imply?

Do you do those things?

Sometimes questions are NOT meant to start a fight.
Did you ever just have a discussion?
Are you looking for a fight?

I didn’t cut and paste that. I copy it from my prayer book. Which has tons of Prayers to God.

I am doing my very best as imperfect as it is. That level of commitment is what I strive for every day, and God knows how many times I fall. yes the Rosary definitely brings me closer. It along with the Eucharist, and other Sacraments keep me centered on Christ. Thanks for asking
