Would it be correct terminology to say to children getting ready to receive their First Communion that when they receive (consume) Christ in Communion they become living tabernacles?

Well technically if they are in the state of grace they are already like tabernacles with the life of God in them.

I don’t have the reference handy, but I seem to remember something along those lines from either a pope or an official document (like the catechism?) or something. I don’t think it’s wrong.

In the Catholic Church, the tabernacle holds Christ so it does sound like an appropriate thing to say.

The song that everybody sings before Holy Communion around here (at several different parishes) goes,

"Lord prepare me/ to be a sanctuary,/
Pure and holy, / tried and true, /
And with thanksgiving, / I’ll be a living/
Sanctuary/ for you. "

“Sanctuary” sounds pretty much like “Tabernacle” so I think it’s the same idea.

I know I have heard this image used by someone. I said something to a group in the RCIA and heard it shortly after. I thought it was Benedict XVI in his early audiennces, but I have not found it. Close, but he is always careful to talk about receiving the Spirit, not just material things, which may be why he stays away from it.
In this marvellous commentary on the Magnificat by St Ambrose, I am always especially moved by the surprising words: “If, according to the flesh the Mother of Christ is one alone, according to the faith all souls bring forth Christ: indeed, each one intimately welcomes the Word of God”. Thus, interpreting Our Lady’s very words, the Holy Doctor invites us to ensure that the Lord can find a dwelling place in our own souls and lives. Not only must we carry him in our hearts, but we must bring him to the world, so that we too can bring forth Christ for our epoch. Let us pray the Lord to help us praise him with Mary’s spirit and soul, and to bring Christ back to our world.
Benedict XVI. Audience of 15 February 2006
