Living with a Jehovah witness

Hi!

The problem with that premise is that there’s complete turn around; that is if he were to cease and desist from coercing you and the children to convert to the Jehovah Witnesses sect and if he were to in actuality (not just on claim) allow you to bring your children in the Catholic Faith, that would be a start to accepting his premises.

But that is the argument of the person that does not want to give up control.

'We don’t need to fix anything ‘cause God and us is all we need.’

Say he had a car that he would lend to me; the car starts having problems and I quickly return it to him and tell him, ‘listen, God will fix the car; there’s no need to ask me about what went wrong and who is at fault; just let the car sit in the garage/back of the house for a few weeks and God will restore it–no need to get it to the mechanic and demand that I pay for the repairs.’

Would he truly agree to that? Would he not want to get into the reality of what caused the problems and if it is found out that it was due to my negligence, would he not want me to paid for the repairs?

It’s back to that 'lets study the Bible, we don’t need no Priest or other Catholic source/s but just us and the Bible (“us and the Bible” is translated in his mind as the Jehovah Witnesses and their theology and teachings).

I don’t mean to scare you but the ole “Pulula, yo solo quiero complacerla” (‘Pulula, all I want to do is please you.’) one nondescript day turned into him coming at me from behind and holding a hammer over my head and my Mom’s screaming “Angel, no mires atras, sigue para tu cuarto, mi hijo.” (‘Angel, don’t turn back, keep going to your room my son.’)

The signs were there but they ran underneath the currents… someone who loses control will not yield unless the other party/ies fully capitulate.

I would love for your family to flourish in love and peace; but all the wishing of the world cannot accomplish this unless all the parties work for this very Love and Peace (Jesus’ Love and Peace).

Angel, that part of your history is frightening. I can’t imagine what you and your poor mother had to deal with. I’m so sorry you guys had to endure that. You seem to be a wonderful person I’m so happy for that.
I would like you all to know I have taken my son’s to their first appointment with a counselor and it went well. The little one was a bit shy but she got him to open up. The older one was an open book.
I can see how the JWs manipulate words to make what they say sound nice or as if you are making your own choice. I have looked through a magazine of theirs about teen depression which encourages them to seek help from a professional stating that they should be careful to follow the instructions of the professional when taking anything prescribed. But never does it say seek counseling. I personally will be taking some counseling so that I can be back to my old self, I feel I have been damaged too much by this JW thinking even though it’s not my way of thinking, it has affected me very much. If anyone, and I mean this with the most respect, ever sees themselves living or about to live with a Jehovah witness i urge you to think about it very carefully before making a move no matter how much In love you may think you are. It’s not easy living with a jehovas witness but if you are sure you want to make the plunge, make sure you set your boundaries in regards to it all or they will take over.

Hi, Gladys!

…the scariest part is that I did not even know that it was coming my way… there was a simple incident over an issue with the refrigerator and I went to take a shower… it seemed that I challenged his “authority” and he wanted to put me in my place… how many strikes would it have taken? Only God knows what was deep in his heart (and this was my natural father).

I also never witness any type of physical batter on my Mom–it is the reason why it did not registered that he should have been waiting to pounce on me…

As they say, but for the Grace of God!

Mom’s love and devotion was always my rock (outside of God); she set the example and the bar–till the day she passed.

My prayers are with you Gladys. May the peace of our lord Jesus be with you!

You need to attack their doctrine at the source, sola scripture or soley scripture. This is like their ultimate weakness and whenever I use this on a JW they always try to change the subject. So sola scriptura is their doctrine that scripture is all you need as authority and scripture is all you need to make doctrines. So start off by introducing the topic and explaining the topic then take that ball to the basket. Because nowhere in the bible does it say that you ONLY and exclusively need scripture.
The doctrine contradicts itself because it presupposes what scripture is; books inspired by God that belong to the Bible. But if the Bible is the only source of Christian truth then we couldn’t have such knowledge because the Bible never tells us which books are inspired. If sola scriptura (solely scripture) were true, then we couldn’t know what scripture is. Do you see how it is self refuting?
Even if the bible did give us a list of inspired books and we believed they are inspired and accepted them; we couldn’t accept that list for we would be guilty of circular reasoning. For example, why do you believe the biblical books are inspired? Because they say that they are inspired! Well, why do you believe them when they say that? Because they are inspired! See it is Sola Scriptura is simply nonsense circular reasoning. The only way to see the bible as being inspired by God without circular reasoning is by the infallible church which Christ has founded, the Church tells us which books are inspired. If every religious scripture (not just the bible) claimed to be inspired by God in their passages, would we abandon the bible just because it “says” that in their scripture? Of course not! So why believe in a doctrine that can’t even handle common sense? You can also attack them on how the watchtower is pagan but make sure you do sola scriptura first. DO NOT LET HIM TRY AND CHANGE THE SUBJECT AS HE WILL TRY TO. HE WILL TRY TO CALL THE RC CHURCH PAGAN AND POINT OUT OTHER THINGS WITHOUT PROVIDING A RESPONSE TO SOLA SCRIPTURA. God love you.

dallas_r thank you for the information you have provided me with. I will try my best to put it into practice.
Does anyone know about disfellowshiping and shunning? I had spoken to my sons about then not getting baptized with the JWs until they were old enough to drive atleast and I told them that they would get shunned if they did something bad once they were baptized. My husband touched these topics with them last night and he mentioned a passage in 1corinthians about how we should remove wicked people from our congregations and for that reason shunning is requied by God and that it works. But I know that Jesus spent time with sinners, Jesus didn’t shun people because they made bad choices or were bad people. Do you guys have any verses to back up the shunning is not ok and what is your take on the whole shunning thing? I personally think it works for the JWs because they isolate themesleves so if they are shunned, they are left all alone and needing to come back because they are lonely. I think that if someone wants to come back to God, it should be for love of God not for the fact that they feel lonely and miss their mom and dad. I need to make sure I steer my son’s in the right direction and hopefully my husband too. Prayers are always welcome and I thank Gid for all of you because you have helped me so much. God bless you all always

Hi Gladys! If Jesus would have taught us to shun our own the way JWs do He would have given us that example with Peter when Peter denied Jesus 3 times. But He did quite the opposite, Jesus kept him close by and continued teaching Peter and allowing Peter to see his wrong himself.

We are all sinners and therefore cannot judge others. JWs agree they too are all sinners but fail to see the double standard they apply to those whos sins become public. It is only those whos sins are public that they apply the shunning principle to.

Peace!!!

Thank you, that is a great example. I think the same way. My husband mentioned to my sons that he was disfellowshiped and went back so he’s living proof that it does work because God commands us to disassociate with those that are wrong doers. But then I see my example in the other hand, I stopped going to church and had nothing to do with my beliefs while I started to go with my husband to the hall, when I saw all the falseness and mainly that they made me question God’s existence with their teachings, it’s when I new I had to go back to the church that Jesus Christ had founded, the faith that never made me question our Heavenly Father’s existence.

Hi!

The problem with their interpretation of shunning is that, as you’ve pointed out, they first make their members fully dependent upon their sect… then they use “shunning” as a powerful means to compel their members to remain in the fold. It is the absolute contrast to Christ’s Love.

People cannot go to “God” because of fear of reprisals but because they Love God.

It is as if I were to create an army to convert the world and I go from place to place murdering all who do not accept “God” according to my profession of faith.

It is an empty and subjugating religious exercise–not pleasing to Yahweh God at all!

…and do you see the difference between being compelled to go to a place because of fear of being left out and not being part of that group and your personal experience, realizing that Yahweh God’s Church is where you must be? You chose God out of Love not fear!
