Although Congress appears to be less than enthusiastic about the idea of a new cabinet position - a Department of Peace, thousands of Catholics and other well-intentioned souls are petitioning their legislators to support creating such a position.

One bill, sponsored by Dennis Kucinich, called for the creation of a Secretary of Peace and Nonviolence appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate. govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h110-808

P & SJ participants in my diocese are using the idea to draw elementary school-age children into the political process … and anti-war movement.

But I’m not sure another federal bureaucracy will solve anything.

We used to have a War Department. Not sure why it was changed to the Department of Defense, since it’s still responsible for both war and defense. A Department of Peace would just infringe on the responsibilities of the State Department.

Or, more accuratly, it would impindge on the already existing Dept of Defense. That agency is better equiped to insure Peace than any other, with the State Dept a close second.
