Local woman to be ordained priest in unsanctioned Catholic service

I find it egregious that they used “unsanctioned Catholic” in the article. This is not Catholic at all. These people are protestants.

The whole article is pretty sickening.

''This would be way more significant if an actual legitimate [Catholic] bishop ordained a woman – that would be much more difficult for the hierarchy to deal with," said Mark A. Chaves, the chairman of the sociology department at the University of Arizona. Chaves is the author of ''Ordaining Women: Culture and Conflict in Religious Organizations."

So, she’s being “ordained” by a bishop who is not an “actual legitimate [Catholic] bishop”? Why does she think there is anything at all valid about this “ordination”?

Another thing, she totally rejected convent life, saying it was “not for her” – then what makes her think she would have the necessary qualities to make a good priest?

I think that this poor soul has confused the Catholic Church with another denomination. No wonder she is so confused over what proper doctrine is if she can’t even get the denomination right.

David, who opposes mandatory celibacy for priests and is married to a former priest, shrugs off the possibility of being excommunicated by the church, saying ''there would be a sadness, but I refuse to recognize their authority to tell me that."
Polls suggest that a majority of US Catholics support the ordination of women, according to James D. Davidson Jr., a professor of sociology at Purdue University. Davidson, who studies Catholic public opinion, said support for ordaining women is strongest among younger and more educated Catholics; overall, he said, about 53 percent of US Catholics support the ordination of noncelibate women.
you’re right, this lady doesn’t make any sence. if she doesn’t recognize the authority of the church, then why does she care? she can start her own version of the catholic church. also, why do these women get ordained on rivers? it’s not like anyone really cares what they do. they act like what they are doing is illegal. the ordination is invalid no matter where you have it. what a loser.

I don’t understand this comment from the article…
The ordination ceremony today is to take place on a boat on the St. Lawrence Seaway, near Gananoque, Ontario, Canada. It will be the first in North America since the so-called Danube Seven – a group of seven women including a former governor’s wife in Ohio, Dagmar Celeste – were ordained by a schismatic Argentine bishop on the Danube River, between Austria and Germany, in 2002.
As here in Rochester, NY, we have had two women ordained. One was ordained in November 2001 and the other in Feburary of 2002.

Also the article says…
David insists that today’s ordinations are valid because they are being performed by women bishops who were consecrated by legitimate bishops. She said she has had no contact with the bishop of Fall River, George W. Coleman, whose diocese includes Cape Cod.
Doesn’t matter if these women “bishops” were ordained by legitimate bishops as the matter of the sacrament was invalid. It would be the same if these bishops attempted to ordain a tree or a dog. It just was not the Sacrament of Holy Orders as the matter, a male, was not present.

I saw this story on the news last night. The reporter said the women could be excommunicated, but what about the bishop who performed this supposed ordination? Wouldn’t he or she be excommunicated for “doing the deed”?

I agree with the previous poster (sorry, I didn’t notice your name) – if they don’t recognize Rome’s authority, why do they care?

Already done ages ago.

Well seeing that, as I read in the article, the bishop doing the “ordinations” is a woman, I believe she was already excommunicated when she was “ordained” a priest.

Does anyone know of any other times when women were pushing for ordination, or is this an entirely new heresy unlike just about every “issue” today?

The ordinations of Fresen, the Danube Seven, as well as today’s ceremony, have been organized by a movement called Roman Catholic Womenpriests.
Oh, that is just so dumb.

Has anyone heard an update on this “ceremony”?

Women fighting to be part of the priesthood

…“People feel safe doing things the way they’ve always been done. But things change. And we have to change with the times,” said United Methodist Church Minister Rhonda Kouterick.

And some women aren’t holding back. Monday, nine women plan to go to the St. Lawrence River to be ordained by female bishops.
The ordination ceremony follows a Women’s Ordination Worldwide conference this weekend.

The group is part of an international coalition of Catholics advocating women’s ordination. The church says not only will the ordinations be invalid; the women involved will be excommunicated from the church.

“I know along the way many reformers have paid that price. And if they’re willing to pay that price it may do what needs to be done,” Kouterick said.

Kouterick says she sees these female crusaders as the beginning of a long movement toward a much more open Catholic Church.

She sees a change toward female priests coming sometime in the next few decades.

Couple years ago, I declared myself the 15th Dalai Lama. Being the spiritual leader of Tibet hasn’t been as much fun as I thought so I’m now considering crowning myself Queen of England.

Maybe the Royal family will come to see the error of their ways and finally include you in your calling to be queen?

No. It’s secret. The announcement was that the ceremony would take place on the St Lawrence River. The news has it that it took place on a tourist boat in Ottawa. Ottawa is not on the St Lawrence River. That could be the Ottawa River or the Rideau Canal. If the ‘thinking’ was to do it outside the jurisdiction of any bishop, then it would have been on the Ottawa River which is between Ontario and Quebec. I wonder if there has been any news about the Women’s Ordination Conference at Carleton University.

I have a Church question. I once read that every mile of earth has a Catholic Bishop with authority over it even sections where there are few or no people living. Is this accurate?

I don’t know. I am going to ask this question on the Ask an Apologist forum. I have been wondering who has jurisdiction over the seas, the air, and outer space. I wonder who might make a good Bishop of Outer Space. :hmmm: D-oh! :bigyikes:
