LOH questions

well not really LOH question but Christian prayer question.

I am new to the Liturgy of the Hours and plan on saying morning and evening prayers.

My question is I know I am to start with the psalter for MP and EP but I get mixed up on memorials. What part of the psalter to I switch to the memorial part…is it right after the psalms?

Could someone give me a basic structure of what to do on the MP and EP when the day is a saint day.

Nothing official here, just tee_eff_em’s rules of thumb to celebrate days according to rank:

• Ordinary days - Everything from the Psalter (or Proper of Seasons, as appropriate)
• Optional Memorials - Proper of Saints + Psalter.
• Obligatory Memorials - Psalms from the Psalter, everything else from the Proper of Saints or Commons of the saint.
• Feasts - Proper Psalms (MP Sunday I, EP from the Proper or Commons), everything else from Proper of Saints or Commons.
• Solemnities - Same as Feasts above, plus EP I

If you’re using a breviary (the three volume set), it should have an ordinary to look up the structure, and I’d suggest getting a directory from your diocesis where it is specified if there’s a feats or memorial, with the addition which propers should (or could ) be used (e.g. for siants, martyrs, virgins and so on), and then they are easy to find.

I hope I am not talking nonsense here, because I do not know if every diocesis has such a directory, but from local custom, I suppose so. It might also be called differently, as I just translated the German word “Direktorium” as it seemed fit to me.

Generally you are given a choice about when to switch in the General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours, n. 235. It can be after the psalms or for just the concluding prayer:
“A. MEMORIALS DURING ORDINARY TIME
235. In the office of readings, at morning prayer, and at evening prayer:
a. the psalms and their antiphons are taken from the current week and day, unless there are proper antiphons or proper psalms, which in indicated as the case occurs;
b. the antiphon at the invitatory, the hymn, the short reading, the antiphons at the Cantilces of Zechariah and of Mary, and the intercessions must be those of the saint if these are given in the proper; otherwise, they are taken either from the common or from the current week and day;
c. the concluding prayer from the office of the saint is to be said;”

Usually there are not many proper texts provided for a memorial. For example for Saint Gregory the Great on 3 September, for Morning Prayer, the only proper text is the Benedictus antiphon and the Concluding Prayer.

The first volumne of your set should give you the structure and general instructions. And an Ordo will tell you how to celebrate day by day.
