Dear friends, can I ask for your prayers for me? I have moved to a new city for university, and I know nobody here. My family is hundreds of miles away, and it is all getting too much for me. I am in constantly tears, because I miss my brother and parents so much. Please, in your charity, pray for me. Thank you. 😊

Will pray for you, adding you to my intentions for my daily Rosary. It’s hard to make new friends and connections but hang in there. God is with you always.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

God bless you and your family!

Hi.
I have said a prayer for you.
I think a lot of us have been there before, have faith, its gets better. 🙂
Some ‘healthy’ recomendations;
  • Never stop going to mass / look for youth groups at your new parish
  • volunteer in local charities
  • join a study group
  • excercise regularly, most schools have have very good gyms
  • get a part time job at your school’s library or student centre
God bless.

Very good suggestions - I hope you will make friends soon! Can you visit the student counselors for suggestions that are specific to the University you are attending - they might have more options for you to get involved.

“The man who fears to be alone will never be anything but lonely, no matter how much he may surround himself with people. But the man who learns, in solitude and recollection, to be at peace with his own loneliness, and to prefer it’s reality to the illusion of merely natural companionship, comes to know the invisible companionship of God.”
Thomas Merton

That being said, it is difficult, but is can be a way to grow, with patience and prayer.
God be with you

Ah. That’s rough. I’ve moved to different country, traveled all over, never had that problem, but I’ve known people who have. I used to tutor ESL, and I once had one student who was from Chile. She was so sad about being away from family that she went into a depression, for a time more or less had trouble functioning. Finally though, she seemed to have turned a corner. She got her driver’s license, got going to the gym and into more things.

Do you contact your family by Skype?

Insofar as getting used to a new city, maybe try to be open to friendship there. Do they have a Newman Center there?

Can you try joining some other groups and university clubs?

I don’t know if you have time for this with your studies, but if you do, could you volunteer even if it’s only 2 hours a week?

Praying.

Dear CutlerB,
Praying for your comfort and protection from Loneliness, Dear.
Clearwater had a good suggestion, Skyping is a great Idea, Have you tried that yet?

Hail Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, Our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, To thee do we send up our sighs, Mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, And after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Dear CutlerB,

First of all, I will pray for you. I have been there like so many other people. Can I witness to you what helped me? I hope so, here it goes.

I am very close to my parents and sisters and I joined the Air Force when I was 24 years old. I had to move to Texas leaving my family in Florida. I was very lonely. When I was at work, it was not bad, but since I worked 12 hours shifts, I would get four days off in a role and those were very difficult days. First, I did join a gym and went there whenever I did not work. Second, I started to go to daily Mass on the days I was off and stayed afterwards and prayed before the Blessed Sacrament or more like cry. I called my family daily, especially my mom. At that point, I was also tested by a protestant deacon I met who was my physical therapist because I hurt my back. He tried so hard to get me out of the Catholic Church. So I was struggling with new back pain and spiritual pain. I was a mess and was very very lonely. This Baptist deacon asked me a question that made a huge difference. He asked me if I knew Jesus and not just know about Him. I got angry at him when he accused me of not knowing Jesus. I realized later, he was right. So I started to pray more to Jesus and asking him to show me himself. I read the Bible and still prayed the Rosary too. I began to know Jesus. The next time he accused me of not knowing Jesus, it didn’t bother me. I simply said I do. Shortly after all this, I was discharged from the Air Force due to medical problems. I went back home and recovered at my parents. Two years later, the Veterans Affair wanting me to work, were willing to pay for me to go to college to get a master’s degree in Theology. My Bachelor’s degree was in Nursing. I could not do that kind of work anymore. So they sent me to college and I picked the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio. That was different and too cold for me. What I experienced this time away from home and not having friends, was not loneliness anymore. The reason is because I knew Jesus was with me everywhere I went on this earth and I would never be lonely again. He did send me a great friend that I still keep in contact now. So you see, when I knew Jesus, I was never lonely again. I lived alone and only had one friend, but people would invite me to parties, nice ones since they were all theology majors, and I had fun. Unfortunately, it was not God’s will for me to finish my degree because my back pain got worse with the cold. I had to leave the school only after one semester there. I tried the second, but that was the cold months and VA would not pay anymore. So when I lived alone the first time and didn’t know Jesus or my Catholic Faith for that matter, I was very lonely and the second time I moved away alone, I knew Jesus and was never alone again and didn’t feel loneliness even though I was alone. I hope that helps you.

I will pray for you for I know it hurts a lot!! huggs

I pray you would meet new people who share your faith & interests. I pray you would feel Jesus’ presence closely. May God’s will be done in your life. :signofcross:

Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, I am far from home and family today and afflicted with a bad case of homesickness. Even though it is important and right for me to be away, I miss my loved ones and my familiar surroundings. Help me to realize that true Christians are never alone—their spiritual family is ever with them:
You, the Father, and the Holy Spirit. Let me dedicate myself anew to You today, thus overcoming this very human feelings within me. Then help me to return home with greater appreciation for my family and for the things that I have from You. Amen.

***Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of our death
Amen.

Thanks. I telephone home often, and we can also see each other on the camera. That helps. 🙂 since I am in Germany, there are no Newman Centres. There is a Blessed Sacrament chapel, but any time I go to pray, it is locked and I don’t seem to be able to find the opening times.

Thank you so much, that’s an inspiring story. 🙂

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.
