You mentioned that you see good fruits therefore it must be from God. Your example of good fruits was that the person gets closure, they feel happy again and some even go back to church. Let me just say the end does not justify the means. And any lie can make me happy make me go back to church and help feel better but have I had a conversion of heart, is there repentance for my sins, have I stopped sinning and started living a saintly life? These are the things that *we consider to be good fruits, not just feeling happy.

Also when you talk about the gift of discerning spirits I get the impression that you don’t know what discernment of spirits means. To have the gift of discerning spirits means that you have the gift of recognizing whether a spirit is of god or of evil. The gift of discernment of spirits is NOT the ability to see spirits but the ability to know if they are evil or good when you do see them.

I can’t believe that there are people who call themselves catholic and doubt on the subject. We are to trust God who is all knowing and all wise. No human dead or alive is more deserving of my trust. God has revealed everything we need to through his Word, Jesus and his Church, no apparition or spirit can add or take away from his revealed truth. Of course there are things that will always be a mystery to us but we are to believe God when he tells us to leave these things alone because he does so for or own good.*

17
My son, conduct your affairs with humility,
and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.
18
Humble yourself the more, the greater you are,
and you will find mercy in the sight of God.
20
For great is the power of the Lord;
by the humble he is glorified.
21
What is too sublime for you, do not seek;
do not reach into things that are hidden from you.
22
What is committed to you, pay heed to;
what is hidden is not your concern.
23
In matters that are beyond you do not meddle,
when you have been shown more than you can understand.

Visions from God bear the fruits of building up the church, conversion of heart, and ultimately bringing glory to God. When saints have seen spirits they are usually spirits in purgatory asking for prayer not spirits coming through saying “hi , I just want you to acknowledge my presence and to remind you of the time when I stepped on gum and that made you laugh your head off”. Think about it … There are only three possible conditions for a departed soul. Either they are in heaven which would make them a spirit of God doing the will of God and therefore would not be apart of any mediumship because that contradicts God’s word. If they are in heaven they are most likely praying for your salvation and not going to a medium to contact you and taking the risk of pushing your curiosity deeper into the occult. And if it were possible do you think that a spirit that beholds the face of God is going to come through to tell you about some funny occurrence that happened in the past or would they urge you to seek God or something along those lines? Another option could be that the spirit is in purgatory… If sooo the saints who have seen souls in purgatory have revealed that they are in great suffering and desperately need are prayers … Again if a spirit in purgatory comes through do you think that they want to share a funny story or just to be acknowledged… Wouldn’t they be more concerned in asking you to please pray for there souls. Lastly the spirit could be in Hell, if that is the case I think the last thing, a spirit suffering the pain of eternal separation from God, wants to do is entertain you with stories. So one could deduce that these spirits are not the souls of the departed because there only three possible options for there state of being all which make it highly unlikely that they would be interested in such contact unless it would be to warn us of hell or to exhort that we live holy lives. The spirits coming through usually make no mention of living Christian lives but on the contrary there’s a suggestion that everyone on the other side is doing just fine or there’s hints to new age way of thinking like reincarnation. It seems like these spirits are being deceitful and we all now who is the father of all lies… Satan. of course it would be in his interest to pose as a friendly human spirit because in the end this will get you interested in contacting them in seeking a connection with them … Pushing the grief stricken person to find comfort in contacting them maybe buying a ouija board to communicate on there own etc and then Satan has opened the door and this my friend is how many demonic possessions occur.*

Julia Mae you are extremely biased and incorrect in your perspective and assumptions on this phenomenon. The very word of God speaks against mediumship leaving no room for exceptions or good intentions. Here are a few verses :

Leviticus 19:31*
'Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God

Leviticus 20:27*
“Men and women among you who act as mediums or psychics must be put to death by stoning. They are guilty of a capital offense.”

Deuteronomy 18:10-13*
Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God.*

1 Chronicles 10:13-14*
Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance, and did not inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.

2 Chronicles 33:6*
He [King Manasseh] sacrificed his sons in the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, practiced sorcery, divination and witchcraft, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, provoking him to anger.

2 Corinthians 11:14-15*
But I am not surprised! Even Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light. So it is no wonder his servants can also do it by pretending to be godly ministers. In the end they will get every bit of punishment their wicked deeds deserve.

God can not possibly be endorsing any of this because God can not contradict himself.*
He strictly forbids any occult practices and contacting of spirits. Any spirit coming through in a reading can not be a spirit of God because every spirit of God does God’s will and going to a medium would be going against his will. A spirit of God cannot contradict the bible or church teaching if so it is not from God. I saw an episode were the medium was doing a reading on a catholic woman who lost her daughter at two years old. And the medium said that the “spirits” informed her that God granted her a gift by allowing her daughters spirit to live in her granddaughters body, that in fact her granddaughter was really her daughter. Ummmm I don’t know about you but this sounds like new age teaching on reincarnation which goes totally against Christianity (which teaches that we have just one life not multiple chances to live again). If this was the case than Christ’s death on a cross was meaningless he is not saving us from eternal damnation because we can come back again.*

We should never contact spirits not only because it offends god but because there is really no way for us to know where they come from. Even the greatest saints in church history had a hard time dicerning whether or not there visions came from God or from Satan. Some saints would first recite there vows of consecration before even talking to a vision of Jesus or Mary because apparently Satan could not stand to her such an humble act of submission and would flee. I’m talking about people who walked closely with God who lived saintly lives. How much harder for us simple believers to dicern these things.*

St. John of the Cross, a Doctor of the Church and one of the greatest of mystic theologians, who had so many special favors himself, is very severe with persons who desire to be the recipients of visions and revelations. He never wearies of repeating that the proximate means of union with God in this life is the three theological virtues of faith, hope, and love. True growth consists in intensified love, which is founded on faith and hope. Now although St. John encourages everyone to aim at infused contemplation, even though relatively few attain it, he strongly reproves anyone who desires to be the recipient of a vision or revelation. They desire to see; faith holds on without seeing.

St. Teresa of Avila, who herself had an abundance of visions, takes a similar stand. She admits that great profit can be had from such things when they are genuine and are received in the proper spirit. Yet she says (Interior Castle 6. 9): “I will only warn you that, when you learn or hear that God is granting souls these graces, you must never beg or desire Him to lead you by this road. Even if you think it is a very good one… there are certain reasons why such a course is not wise.”

She then goes on at length to explain her reasons: First, such a desire shows a lack of humility; second, one thereby leaves self open to “great peril because the devil has only to see a door left a bit ajar to enter”; third, the danger of auto-suggestion: “When a person has a great desire for something, he convinces himself that he is seeing or hearing what he desires.” Fourth, it is presumption for one to want to choose his own path, as only the Lord knows which path is best for us. Fifth, very heavy trials usually go with these favors: could we be sure of being able to bear them? Sixth, “you may well find that the very thing from which you had expected gain will bring you loss.”

Yes, I saw that last night and thought that was extremely odd. I thought, so now the grandmother is happy and her daughter is without a daughter because they told her it’s really her sister? Uhhh, that’s just not possible. And creepy anyway.

Think hard, folks.

If psychics and mediums really exist then why isn’t anyone utilizing their powers to actually do something? To genuinely do something: predict economic upheaval, stop murders before they happen, help thwart the plans of dictators, warn of the existence of a new disease, solve historical debates, anything?

None of them are doing anything like that. WHY?

None of these powers have been demonstrated under laboratory conditions. WHY?

Think about it. WHY?

I personally believe that there are people who can contact the dead or demons or whoever it is that shows up to them. I also think that the Lord and the Church are pretty clear on this issue, it’s a huge NO NO!
I’ve seen the episode that the OP mentioned. It’s way worse than she described.

the medium starts out by asking a lady if her mother was really religious because she sees her standing behind her daughter making the Sign of the Cross multiple times. She tells the (Catholic) woman that this is her mother’s sign that she shouldn’t worry and that this whole experience is okay. Long story short, her final message was that God has granted her an amazing gift because the soul of her daughter who passed away many years ago at the age of two has been granted life again and lives in the body of her granddaughter…YIKES!!! The woman weeps and is in total belief of what the medium has told her because she always felt like her granddaughter was an “old soul”… One more Catholic lead astray…

Thoughts regarding Theresa Caputo:
There are 3 types of spirits: Our human spirit, God’s spirit, and the evil spirits. So Theresa is channelling something? The question is where is her knowledge coming from and what is the fruit? Initially, it may seem that the fruit is good. People go home feeling better about their loved ones and let go of guilt. But these “so called loved ones who come through” appear to have a very earthly, carnal quality. Is that what they have after death? They have truth, they are humbled. Do all these souls have permission from God to talk to their loved ones? Do they all bypass God? What about prayer? Now, I have seen many episodes where a loved one has committed suicide. Do these souls not need prayer? Does Therea ever lead anyone to the truth of Jesus? Or to pray for the souls of the departed? No. That is a truth of our Catholic Faith. Theresa mixes talk of Hindu Chakra’s , sage brushing, Native American spiritually with the rosary and her catholic faith? What does her bishop say to her? Her parish priest? These things are incompatable. I have a private chapel in my home. I pray with others. Sometimes spiritual warfare is involved, and healing. Throughout my summer, through God’s love, mercy and grace, not me, God helped many a soul. It is through prayer, the sacraments and charity for souls that we put ourselves at God’s disposal. Through the hundreds of hours of praying for others, no money changed hands. God’s love is a gift. I know there are ministries that involve fees and travel. That is different. But to make monetary profit in the way Theresa does by charging a lot of money is not God’s way. Theresa may have seen some spirits when she was 4 years old. She needed much discernment to see where this was coming from and what God wanted her to do. God loves the Hindu’s and wants to teach all humanity His truth about Himself and His Passion, Death and Resurrection. We want to escape the cross, we don’t want to be on our knees and enter into our suffering with Jesus. Theresa doesn’t teach the truths of our Catholic faith. She mixes many things which is confusion. Confusion is not of God, but of our enemy. My Catholic mother when I was young foolishly and naively opened a portal to hell in our home by playing with a ouija board and many things began to happen in our home and to be personally because I am sensitive to spiritual things. It took me many years to understand what open doors I had to close and had to have many years of deliverance due to the effects of all my mother had opened coupled with my own woundedness. I submitted this all to God. From this came my deep desire to pray for others and help them to be set free. If our gifts do not lead us to the heart of Jesus and Mary in humble service than what we do is like dust. Theresa I believe is entrented in a deception of her true gifts. Those who see her put their trust in her. They should be putting their trust in God. As far as I can see this is not happening. If anyone reading this would say an Our Father or Hail Mary for Theresa, that would be an act of charity on her behalf. God bless your day… Lorraine

Instead of consulting a medium (who might be a charlatain, who might be contacting demons instead of our loved ones, etc etc.)

Why not help our loved ones the way our Church tells us will actually benefit them…through prayer.
****III. THE FINAL PURIFICATION, OR PURGATORY ****
1030 All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.
1031 The Church gives the name *Purgatory *to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned.606 The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:607
As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.608

1032
This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: "Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin."609 From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.610 The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead:
Let us help and commemorate them. If Job’s sons were purified by their father’s sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.611

I Think Theresa Caputo is a sweet woman, however, It is not the souls of our dearley departed she is contacting… The Spirits or Demons know your name. God says they roam about the dryness looking for peace, a place which to rest… the Dry Place is the Earth… a place to rest is your body.

Jesus is the name above all names, He mentions casting out demons 75 or 76 times in the Bible or 25% of the whole. He gave his deciples authority to cast out demons. They are real.

Just my opinion, Yes and No. Read the Holy Word of God Allmighty and you will have your answer. We need to pray for Theresa. She does even know what she is doing.

God Bless.

I believe Theresa is a good woman who was given a gift by somebody up there. She helps people contact the ones they love, and brings great joy to the ones who reach out to her. Who are you to judge, and say what she does is wrong when all she has done is give closure and happiness to others. I don’t understand why Catholics are afraid of anything mildly off the beaten path of your religion and pin it as satanic.

As a former psychic and medium, who has been radically reverted (Praise God) I now know and understand where all of the information I was passing on was coming from. I truly believed I was helping people, but then I came to understand all help is in and through the Trinity.

I have a close relative who is a cafeteria catholic and refuses to listen to me regarding psychics. She thinks its perfectly okay to watch Long I. Medium and to go to psychics. The one thing I am not seeing here on this thread is the possibility of “opening doors” to the sinister, i.e. like a Oijua Board. Can that happen?

Hi everyone I wanted to respond to this thread. I am new here. I will try and make it light as there is some heavy subject material I will write about.

3 months ago my only sister took her life. She left behind notes and wow were they angry. Very detailed notes. I was the person who got her box of belongings from the hotel she was staying at and the first family to have access to these notes. I was devastated. So someone on a forum suggested a medium through facebook. Being so distraught with many unanswered questions I sought out this medium. I was not really taking into consideration what I was doing was terribly and morally wrong. So with trepidation I proceeded further in contacting her, thinking yea right! She can’t pick up on anything.

About three days later she contacted me through facebook with a word document attachment of her reading. Now folks there were things in these written notes nobody could have known about. In particular an item in which my sister spoke of with great emotion and concern. This medium lady was able to describe this item which is not a common thing and also my sisters anger towards her ex husband and things she said and felt in her suicide notes. I will tell you this, I was shaken. I felt as though I crossed a line in which I should not have done. And I felt terribly corrupted after that event. Looking back I am disgusted that I even took that path but desperation and grief can make you do the dumbest things. I beg God for his forgiveness I am ashamed that I did this. I know it was not my sister but the Devil playing his tricks. The dead do not communicate with us they are too busy in the afterlife. So if anyone reads this maybe it will give some perspective on the topic and these are things that Chistians are not supposed to dabble in. I only pray I will be forgiven for this and I do not feel it a Mortal sin however it is really a bad bad thing.

As far as the Long Island Medium I honestly thing bad energies are contacting her. I just do not believe that the dead try and make contact. My mother passed 18 years ago and I loved her with all my heart. I’ve never felt her. In the end all things will be revealed and I refuse to watch that show or anything like it.

Those of you who are “believers” in this stuff: how do you separate truth from fantasy?

Does evidence matter at all to any of you? Or is it all about your “feelings” and “personal beliefs”?

That’s just it. This is not truth. Mediums are false and should never be called upon.

Although I’ve been raised Catholic and consider myself one, I always doubted if God
or heaven ever existed.

I was overjoyed when first starting to watch Long Island Medium, because her readings
have definitely persuaded me to believe in the above. She’s most definitely not cold reading or a fraud, however, I did discuss the matter with two friends of mine who are Jevoah’s witness. They said that although her material is “true”, its coming from satan.

How would satan be benefiting in my situation? It it because he’s misleading me into thinking there is God and Heaven? Please provide me some insight.

Thank you.

Hi I know there are others who will have far better insight then myself. I am renewing my Catholic faith and boy am I rusty.

It would be my feeling that since the Bible states not to deal with mediums or anything of that nature my guess is that the Lord would not allow our loved ones to come through others to get to us. When a loved one appears to come through another person I believe it is satan pretending. And even though it has given you a closer belief in Heaven it actually has pulled you further and your not even aware of it. The Devil comes in many disguises and he can pretend to be good just to lead us down that path. Your already partially on that path and I’d advise to get off. If we can’t look up to God, Jesus and all the angels and saints for security in our beliefs then we are in trouble and in jeopardy. There is no reason to turn to these people or believe in them. It is all false. This would be my belief and I am sure someone else can come along and better explain.
