“Hello, I am seeking advice about a long term relationship. I am 24 and have been in this relationship for 4 years. We are both practicing Catholics. Met in college and have been out of college for 2 years now. I have a well paying job and live alone. But I do not enjoy living alone at all.”
If you hadn’t been dating for four years, would you still want to marry this person?
Your post was very brief, but you didn’t write anything special about him except for just basic resume type stuff: practicing Catholic, masters in theology, etc. Are you still deeply, passionately in love with him and excited at the thought of being together for real, or are you just afraid to be alone?
“My boyfriend finished his masters in Theology a few months ago and says he is waiting for a teaching job to come up. He will not make any commitment until he is earning money.”
If commitment means engagement, that’s sensible. He’s only finished his masters a few months ago. The hiring season for teachers is still running (right?), so it’s still early days.
On the other hand, if “commitment” means something less than engagement, it’s not reasonable.
Also, does he have a plan for if no teaching job materializes? Also, are the two of you prepared to raise a family on a Catholic theology teacher’s salary, or will you have to work indefinitely?
“In the mean time, I feel lonely living by myself and confused as to whether I am wasting my time. I also am concerned that the relationship may be bad for me spiritually, as I think the Church teaches that you should not date more than about 2 years. Advice is much appreciated. Thanks”
As people have mentioned, there’s no official church teaching on the subject.
At your age, I wouldn’t have been thrilled to be living alone and be dating so long, but as an older person, I would encourage you to be patient until September. He’s probably really stressed out about the job thing, especially after having put so much time and money into his graduate degree.
In the meantime, here are some things to do:
- Consider a pet (if you like animals)
- Consider a short-term roommate (maybe just for the summer)
- Take a personal finance class with your boyfriend
- Start seriously building savings for your eventual wedding and newlywed/new parent expenses
- Work on at least one new interest, preferably two or more.
Best wishes!
