I keep seeing men dressed in long ties with business suits at mass.

Yet at mass we go to visit GOD. This isn’t just a business meeting.

If we were invited to a ball with the president, you wouldn’t wear a business suit with a long tie… you would wear a tuxedo. Even for a wedding we wear tuxedos. Is God less important than a wedding?

Then the few people who DO wear a tuxedo and bowtie to mass, have on a BLACK tie. Black tie is for formal but not extra-special occasions. This is GOD they are visiting. Why not bring out the white bow tie for mass? We’re only asked to go once a week…

Ooh, does that mean the ladies should break out the swankiest ballgown, furs and bling then … sweet!

One problem with polls is that the choices given are often not useful. For example, I don’t think dress for mass should be either a business suit, black tie or white tie. So I am left with come as you are. Of course, there are some things that would be inappropriate at mass, so even that answer has problems.

You’re kidding, right?
I think Neil is trying to make a point here - it’s a taking of the arguments used by many who demonise anything less than suit’n’tie on Sundays to their (il?)logical conclusion.

Not at all. In fact right now I’m taking a course in making chainmail. I’m going to buy gold chains and make them into a chain-mail outfit made of pure gold. This will be my sunday best which I will wear to mass. Nothing but pure gold clothing to stand in God’s presence.

This is a ‘reductio ad absurdum’ argument!

Now I gotta get a freaken tux to go to mass …
Please, please tell me this is a joke thread. Oh please be a joke responce thread.😃

It’s the Wedding Feast of the Lamb. Proper dress would be a tux. 😃

White tie, as well as black tie, is properly worn ONLY after 6 pm.

People should come as they are. I have been at daily masses downtown Minneapolis, both lunchtime and after the workday. You see so many people with their work attire on squeezing in mass between lunch hour or right after work. There is nothing wrong with that.

The only times I have seen tuxes at mass (outside of weddings) are the Sat afternoon masses in the spring right before prom starts. The teenagers come in with their prom tux and dress on, go to mass, and then enjoy the prom and after prom activities and sleep in Sunday morning. I am just glad to see them there.

My problem is who decides what is appropriate for mass? A business suit may be a customary form of dressing up, but who is to say that particular custom is right. On the other hand, I sometimes wear jeans to work, so for me to dress up is to wear slacks and a button down shirt without a tie. If I wear that attire to mass, who is to say that it is not appropriate?

Yes, and not even to every event that is held after 6 pm. You will not find men who own tuxedos wearing them to their every formal social event, nor to every public event held after 6 pm. When the President met with the Pope, the President wore a business suit, not a tuxedo.

Long gowns and tuxedos are attire that rich people traditionally wore to their most formal evening social events. Those who wear tuxedoes earlier in the day are actually breaking the more traditional rules. (There are morning suits for formal social occasions such as weddings that are held earlier in the day.)

Those who wore this very formal kind of clothing on a routine basis have never been many, and they lived long ago. They did not wear it for Sunday worship, even then.

I agree. There is a lot of room between “whatever you have on is fine” and “you must wear a tie.”

Otherwise, those who don’t wear formal business attire on a daily basis will be discouraged from going to daily Mass. The standard of dress for Mass should be based on the formality of the Mass and when the Mass is offered. A daily Mass should not require a suit and tie.

Is there some public event that is more important than the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass? Is there some guest of honor more important than our Lord?

Would you even compare meeting the pope to meeting Jesus Christ himself?

Today almost anyone can afford formal attire. It is no longer something only within reach of the rich.

What could possibly be a more important event than receiving Christ at Holy Mass?

Perhaps a fine English Morning Suit then?

While I certainly could afford formal attire to wear to mass, that doesn’t necessarily mean that purchasing such attire would be a prudent use of the resources that God has entrusted me with. After all, the money spent on the clothes and the time and money spent having them dry cleaned, etc, might be better spent furthering my walk with God in some other way.

Gee, where have I heard that before? “Dad, none of the other kids wear these clothes during the day, why do I have to wear them?” I think we all know the answer to that:

What’s more important: what everyone else is doing, or what God wants you to do?

What do you put first: the traditions of men who tell you what’s ‘cool’ or ‘proper’ to wear before 6pm? Or do you make the decision based on what is the ABSOLUTE BEST presentation you can do for the Lord at Holy Mass?

If all the other men were jumping off a cliff, would you do that too? No? Then why do you have to do the same as them when they refuse to wear their best just because mass is before 6pm?

Yes, we’ve all heard about the mistakes that the Church made in the past. People were not always as holy as they could be. All the more reason for us to make up for it now and dress properly, to our BEST every Sunday.
