can you believe it?
All Americans, not only in the states most heavily affected but in every place in this country, are rightly disturbed by the large numbers of illegal aliens entering our country. The jobs they hold might otherwise be held by citizens or legal immigrants. The public services they use impose burdens on our taxpayers. That’s why our administration has moved aggressively to secure our borders more by hiring a record number of new border guards, by deporting twice as many criminal aliens as ever before, by cracking down on illegal hiring, by barring welfare benefits to illegal aliens. In the budget I will present to you, we will try to do more to speed the deportation of illegal aliens who are arrested for crimes, to better identify illegal aliens in the workplace as recommended by the commission headed by former Congresswoman Barbara Jordan. We are a nation of immigrants. But we are also a nation of laws. It is wrong and ultimately self-defeating for a nation of immigrants to permit the kind of abuse of our immigration laws we have seen in recent years, and we must do more to stop it.
oh wait this is from bill clinton’s 1995 state of the union address

my bad; it sounds like it was current trump

I don’t know if Obama said anything or not, but he sure did beef up the border patrol. At one point during his administration I was looking for work and checked out the federal government want ads and about every other job was Homeland Security working our southern border with Mexico.

Wasn’t that when they were actively encouraging unaccompanied minors to visit? Whole lotta pick up and processing to do.

This was a couple years before the minors started arriving in droves. I didn’t apply for any of the jobs as I was looking for something at a desk in some other part of the country, so not sure what the exact particulars were.

I always think it’s funny that people say “undocumented immigrants”. What they really mean is “people who illegally entered the country and are flouting our laws.”

I mean, I have no problem with immigration, but I struggle to understand why people on the left have an issue with forcing people to obey the law when entering a country?

Immigration–when we spread cheese all over the lawn and then complain when the mice come to eat it.

Nah, you didn’t fool me. The speech you quoted is much more logical and eloquent than our current President could manage:
My administration has answered the pleas of the American people for immigration enforcement and border security. By finally enforcing our immigration laws, we will raise wages, help the unemployed, save billions and billions of dollars, and make our communities safer for everyone. We want all Americans to succeed, but that can’t happen in an environment of lawless chaos. We must restore integrity and the rule of law at our borders. For that reason, we will soon begin the construction of a great, great wall along our southern border. As we speak tonight, we are removing gang members, drug dealers, and criminals that threaten our communities and prey on our very innocent citizens. Bad ones are going out, as I speak, and as I promised throughout the campaign. To any in Congress who do not believe we should enforce our laws, I would ask you this one question: What would you say to the American family that loses their jobs, their income, or their loved one because America refused to uphold its laws and defend its borders?
(from Trump’s address Feb. 28, 2017 to the joint session of Congress)
