Provided he’s put the device into ‘flight mode’ and turned off the sound to ensure no accidental beeps or squeaks or forgotten alarms or calendar entries then fine by me.
I once followed along with morning prayer using a PDA and I have the Universalis app for my iPhone for the full Divine Office and Mass readings. I don’t use it in Church because I actually prefer my printed missal, but it is certainly a great help when preparing one’s breviary to get all the ribbons in the right places since it puts all the bits of the Hour in continuous order on the screen.
The one thing I will say is that one needs to be aware of the fact that computer programs, whether delivered on a computer, an iPad or any other portable device, are subject to programming bugs. I’d suggest using them as a tool to assist you rather than as the sole source of the texts of the liturgy. Certainly, if I’d relied on it, there would have been one occasion where I had the wrong parts proper to one of the days of the Triduum this year. That would have been embarrassing since I was visiting a Seminary at the time! However, as a general rule it really helps to get one’s breviary correct, and let’s face it, breviaries are really complicated!
