Hey guys. I’m trying to find a new Bible for myself, and I’d be interested in one that has explanations of the history, context, and current social norms/etc. of each portion of the Bible included. Is there anything out there like that?

Eamon

You probably will need to purchase a Bible commentary and a Bible dictionary. You can use those to look up some of the things that are unfamiliar in terms of manners and customs back then in those reference books. A good concordance is also useful.

Hi eamon, I can highly recommend the Net Bible, bible.org/ you can view it online or download the full bible for free before buying a printed copy. They are currently working on those books that are in catholic bibles, so the current edition lacks that part.

The Navarrre is good but by the time you are done you will spend some $$$$$. Now if you are serious and want a great commentary then look for A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture. It will cost as well.

Peace,
David

Not one made especially for Catholics, I’m afraid. The rest of us have been waiting, but Catholic book publishers have been slow to get off the dime on this one. The Ignatius Study Bible is in it’s formative stages (being released one or two books at a time in small paperback editions) but it will be a while until it’s all done. There’s always the NAB Catholic Study Bible, but many serious Catholic Bible readers dislike the both the translation and the footnotes (if you want to know why, there’s a couple of dozen threads on this topic if you care to use the search feature to look them up).

In the meantime, I recommend you do what the rest of us do: get one favorite reliable Catholic translation and a couple of others for comparison. Then use the Catholic reference material that is available now until something comprehensive comes around.

For information on getting started in this, I humbly recommend you visit my website, linked below.
