I need suggestions for some sort of reference guides, something for looking up the location of topics in Scripture that is simple enough that high school students can look up topics quickly and easily. I’d prefer something printed, but a website or mobile app could work if it’s free. The simpler the better.

Thanks!

Could you be more specific? Does it have to be both Old and New Testament? I can give you two things I know of. I got my sister an NRSVCE gift edition, because she wanted a Bible. Anyway, it has an index in the back, and you can get it at some bookstores. It’s actually a really cool thing. I have the Ignatius Study Bible New Testament which has something similar, I got it as a gift. I think either one may be very helpful for you, because it does have topics indexed.

Both NT and OT would be strongly preferred. Thanks for the response.

A good study Bible would include all of that and would work. Is there such a thing as a study Bible minus the Bible? 😉

Sounds like you might want a topical index of the bible. There are several old Protestant ones, like Nave’s Topical Index, found online. These may exhibit some slant to the selections of verses and exclude the Deuterocanonicals. A topical index, if you find one, should work with any version of the bible.

Catholic Answers has had a short tract for years with just a few topics in it.

Thanks Joe, I have no idea what a biblical concordance is, but from the looks of it it’d be above and beyond what I’d need. And expensive 🙂

I’ll have to do a search myself Pug. If it were for my eyes only I’d be okay with a Protestant source, but in a teaching setting I couldn’t use it.

Good stuff those ideas are useful!

A biblical concordance is basically a word index. It takes every word that is used in the Bible, alphabetizes them, and then tells you where it appears. So you can look and see every time the word “office” or “love” or “Jesus” appears in the Bible. That Emmaus Road one is only expensive because it is out of print. It was only ~$20 when it was in print.

Pug mentioned topical indexes, which is probably more what you have in mind. There are several Bibles I have seen that have a very bare bones type of topical index along the lines of “Here are Scripture verses about trusting in God” or “Perseverance in Suffering”, etc.

The Divine Armory of Holy Scripture by Kenelm Vaughan is an extensive collection of Scripture references organized under topics that are derived from the Roman Catechism and the Summa Theologica of St. Thomas Aquinas.
