Looking for a Catholic Psychiatrist in Chicagoland

Hi folks!

Do you know any good Catholic psychiatrists and/or psychologists in the Chicagoland area? Preferably female. I’m having a lot of difficulty finding someone. I’ve already asked our Catholic doctor and lots of local priests to no avail. I really appreciate the help.

God loves with Holy Love. Literally.

Ask God to help us to believe literally. I am having trouble too. It is true, though.

Excuse me, but that is a rather absurd assertion. I don’t know about Freud and Jung - I’m not qualified/knowledgeable enough about them to say. In general, though, psychiatry and psychology can certainly be in accord with Catholic teaching. There is no inherent impasse between faith and science.

This is simply not church teaching. :rolleyes:

OP, check with your the Diocese up there. They likely have a list of the Catholic physicians of all types.
Prayers for your healing and treatment by a Catholic professional.
 
I just want to affirm the suggestions of catholictherapists.com (which frequently gets recommended by the Catholic apologists here at Catholic Answers) as well as to contact your local diocese (the Archdiocese of Chicago). Your best bet would be to start with the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Catholic Charities office. Though each diocese is structured a bit different, counseling services most often fall under their umbrella. Catholic Charities would also be able to assist if you are in financial need.

I also want to affirm that MiserableSinner’s post is not Catholic teaching. I studied psychology in college and I have several (strong Catholic) friends who went even further in that field than myself. Though there is a lot of wackiness in certain segments and among certain psychologists, the field itself is like any other field that pursues knowledge. Truth does not contradict truth and there is plenty of good to be gained from a rightly ordered study of psychology.

There is a literal Devil. The Devil is the one who inspired much of psychiatry. Freud and Jung are to be studied if one wants to understand the spiritual influences in psychiatry.

Science has been defined poorly. Theories should not be given the label “science” and then contrasted to “religion.” There is a literal Devil. He knows there is one Truth, one Love, and one Faith - the Catholic Faith, and he uses psychiatry in the same way he uses anything else that comes from the world and not from the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit never told us to believe in psychiatry. He told us to take the Holy Bible literally. Psychiatry comes from the world:

2 Corinthians 4:4 tells us that Satan is the “god of this world.”
And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus’ sake.…

1 John 3:8 tells us that whoever sins willfully is of the devil

Psychiatry teaches us selfish ambition and worldly pursuit.

You are creating a false dichotomy. We are all in agreement that the devil is real and that the Holy Bible is the inspired and inerrant word of God. Just because those things are true does not mean it naturally follows that psychiatry is “of the devil.” That’s a big leap in logic. If that were true, bishops would be shutting down places like the Institute for Psychological Sciences rather than serving on their Board of Directors. 😉

It is true that some psychology is very misleading; not so with those who are schooled in Catholic theology and teaching.
 
I avail myself of psychiatric services regularly. They are not of the devil. The Lord Himself has used psychiatrists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, ECT, and medications to help heal me of debilitating, life-long depression. I am still alive today not because of the Evil One but because of the work God has done through some wonderful people.

I love you. God loves you. Do you literally believe God used electric shocks to heal you? He literally loves you. Literally.

It is true that sometimes we suffer according to His Holy Will, but He does not use electric shocks to heal us. He literally loves us. He literally loves you. Literally.

God’s Church has literally been saving souls for 2000 years. Not the world’s theories on how the human mind works. The Word of God says that a mind can be set on things of the Spirit or things of the flesh. God loves literally. Literal love. Literally. Instead of looking for a psychiatrist, we should seek God’s face.

Would you say the same thing to someone suffering from cancer? Don’t do chemo or radiation; instead, believe in God’s love? (As a side note, how are those two mutually exclusive?)

If you cut your hand while gardening, do you wash the cut, put some disinfectant on it, and cover it with a bandage, or do you opt to “believe in God’s love” instead?

If you see someone at the grocery store clutch their chest, gasp, and fall to the floor, do you tell them “God loves you” and walk past, or do you tell someone to call 911 while starting CPR?

If, as I assume, you agree that modern germ theory has something to it and that practical as well as spiritual help is important (i.e., CPR) in matters of physical health, then why not in matters of mental health as well? If a person suffers from insufficient serotonin or don’t process it correctly, then why not take medication to correct this imbalance?

Sure, Jung had a lot of problems, but he’s hardly the foundation for Christian psychiatry. Also, we’re Catholics, not Luddites.

MiserableSinner - psychiatry is NOT evil. Yes, there have been some evil psychiatrists, but psychiatry itself is morally neutral.

Look at Physics, Biology & Chemistry. Humans can do wonderful things with them, which help people. Or bad people can do horrible things with them and kill everyone on the planet. Science (and even the Social Sciences) are morally neutral.

The morality and/or immorality of science lies with the individual scientists, not science itself.

MiserableSinner - You do realize that the blatantly untrue poopoo you are spewing is almost word for word what good o’m Tom Cruise told Matt Lauer years ago in the infamous interview on the Today Show. You self identify as a Roman Catholic, but seem to share the same nutty belief concerning psychiatry that Scientology cult members do. Please do not discourage someone who might be a danger to themselves or others from seeking medical intervention with a psychiatrist. I would venture to guess that you would not like to live with the guilt of convincing another human that they don’t need help and then that person either kills himself or others. If you were in a conversation with Papa Francis about this situation, I can assert with confidence that he would tell you that your stance is not true and dangerous to boot.

I’m praying that you find the help you desperately are in need of.

Agreed. The Church is not opposed t medicine, science, or psychiatry. Indeed, when a person is believed to be possessed, the first thing the Diocesan Exorcist does is insist that psychiatrists and psychologists do a complete workup.
So, once again, you are really off the rails here.
No one is doubting the devil, and I believe that woman never said she had electroshock therapy.
Please refrain from embroidering the truth.
 
I see someone else on this thread who literally needs the help of a mental health professional. Literally. Like, right now.
