I’m looking for a Church document that outlines the Communion Service. I read a few documents on the worship of the Eucharist outside of Mass, but I didn’t see anything about a Communion service. I believe a center near me is abusing the Service but I need a Church document to see if they actually are.

Also, are there any documents on retreats (either youth or other retreats)? I doubt it, but it’s worth a shot to ask.

The relevant book is called Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest, and to my knowledge it is not online.

There is an outline there but I’m sure the US has a book that contains all the prayers approved by the USCCB.

Canada had just such a ritual book, it’s called “Sunday Celebration of the Word and Hours” and includes a choice of prayers to be used and detailed rubrics to make it easy for any parish to celebrate the service with ease.

Why do you think the place you know is abusing the service?

@ Phemie:

I think it’s being abused because they put on a skit when the Gospel is being read. A full blown skit.

Talk about protestantizing the Church

Yeah, i know that was an instigator…whatever 😛

My question is this(sorry to derail)-Would one of these communion services be used in remote places that often cannot have a Priest celebrate Mass save once a month? For example, rural Peru or whatnot.

Thanks for any help.

oh, and coolduude, lets hope that this wacky practice stops!

Nope, a priest would be available. There is a church located 4 and a half miles away and another 5 miles away (in the other direction). There’s about 4 or 5 churches within 10 miles. And this center I’m talking about is in the country, so it’ll take about 10 minutes to get from church A to retreat center B. Yet they don’t have a priest or deacon for the Communion Service.

I am going to try to work with my theology teacher to get this changed (he’s pretty orthodox). But I need documentation first so I have some credibility.

I found this in the book Mark mentioned:
Nothing that is proper to Mass, and particularly the presentation of the gifts and the eucharistic prayer, is to be inserted into the celebration.
Would this alone be enough to render invalid the Communion Service I described? Or do I need more documentation?

Huh? Only if skits are proper to the Mass.

A Communion Service is neither valid nor invalid but it can be abusive if it doesn’t follow the format and restrictions set out by Rome. I don’t think Rome has ever envisioned skits in any liturgical celebration. Are they acting out the Gospel or doing some other kind of skit?

Is this an actual parish or just a place offering a Communion Service to people who could easily go to a parish where there is Mass? Is this on Sunday?

The Directory for Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest says:
Conditions for Holding Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest
18. Whenever and wherever Mass cannot be celebrated on Sunday, the first thing to be ascertained is whether the faithful can go to a church in a place nearby to participate there in the eucharistic mystery. At the present time this solution is to be recommended and to be retained where it is in effect; but it demands that the faithful, rightly imbued with a fuller understanding of the Sunday assembly, respond with good will to a new situation.

To my knowledge, they read the Gospel but act it out at the same time. Like, they’ll read a sentence or two, the people will act out what was just said, then they’ll continue reading. See what I mean?

This Service is held on a Saturday morning in most cases. The center where it is held is 4 and a half miles away from one church and 5 miles away from another. In all, there are 5 or 6 churches within 10 miles of this place. The retreat center also has it’s own chapel, but its not used for the Communion Service. they also don’t bring in a priest or deacon, which makes no sense because there would be no time conflict with the nearby churches.

I hope that answers your questions! 👍

It’s a little weird that they do that skit thing for adults, but at least they are actually reading the Gospel.

Of course it’s a lot weird that they do a Communion Service on Saturday morning – such services are meant for be celebrated on Sundays in communities that don’t have access to Mass. They would be much better off celebrating the Liturgy of the Hours, the official prayer of the Church. Of course if the bishop has allowed it then it’s none of my business.😉

Haha the skits are put on by teens for teens. I suppose I should have clarified that 😛

Would you consider this Communion Service abusive?
