Hi, I’m a member of a Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod and was very happy there. However, we’ve moved and there are no Lutheran churches in my new town. What church would be most similar in doctrine? Thank you in advance

Hmmm, not sure how orthodox the Episcopalians are in your area of MI, but that’s a possibility. Otherwise you might just have to visit a Catholic parish! 😃

Or you might stumble across a Continuing Anglican parish. Like Episcopal, only orthodox.

There is still a remnant of orthodox Episcopalians, but I’m not totally sure if they exist outside of the Pittburgh diocese. I know the Episcopalians around here (IN) are extremely liberal. The Indy diocese has a female bishop, if that tells you anything.

I live in suburban Detroit, and know of a few good LCMS congregations in the area. Send me a private message if you’d like more info.

There are also a handful of the types of Anglican parishes of the type mentioned by GKC. My in-laws belong to one of them.

This is a small town and I haven’t heard of a Continuing Anglican church around here. From what I’ve heard our Episcopal church is definately not orthodox and does have a female bishop too. I"m thinking of visiting the Catholic church (which is what led me to this website) but I wanted to see what other options are out there.

The Episcopal church will give you liturgical-style worship, but doctrinally the LCMS is much more conservative. The other churches which might be more compatible with LCMS’s beliefs will probably not be liturgical in their style of worship.

BeliefNet has a “Belief-o-matic” quiz which will tell you which denominations match your beliefs. This might help you figure out where to start in seeking a new church home.

Good luck and God bless! And you are always welcome to come to Mass. 🙂

It does. It tells me it’s mainstream Episcopalian.

Quincy is relatively orthodox, as are Fort Worth and San Joaquin. But no diocese in the Episcopal Church is orthdox, strictly speaking. Even Fort Worth, where +Iker knows one cannnot ordain a female to the priesthood.

Hence, I’m a Continuing Anglican.

Welcome to the forums, Michigan22! 👍

That is all you’ll get from me sinse I don’t know much about Michigan (I’m in new England!). I will say, though, that some of the best people I know are Lutheran, including some of my inlaws.

Can’t get much more orthodox than the Catholic church. Except maybe a Traditional Latin Mass Catholic Church. That may be going a bit too far for you, though.

It just really depends. I would visit the mainline churches in town like the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Episcopalian. You never know, they can be very liberal and they can be pretty conservative. Big liturgical conservative churches are hard to come by…good luck. If conservative is what you are looking for, not so much liturgical, Baptist or Nazarene would not be too much of shock to your system.

Wow. Your town must be very small if there are no Lutheran churches at all, even ELCA. What denominations have churches in your town?

I tookt he belief net test. I should be 7th day adventest or some other such. It says I would be equally happy as a Muslim as Catholic, but it never asked if I consider pork products a necessity of life  It was a fun little quiz. Some of the quesitons are a little tricky as two answers may fit your beliefs and you may not put enough emphasis on some things for it to like you choice (or too much)

I was tied with 100% Roman Catholic and 100% Conservative Protestant. There was another quiz I took once where I was Lutheran, Catholic or orthodox Quaker.

True. We really cannot recommend a church that is similar to LCMS if we do not even know what churches are available.
Yes, the OP has said he is considering the Catholic church, and even as a Protestant, depending upon what is available, I would concur. Of course if there is a United Methodist church it should be a no brainer 😃 😉
Seriously though,
I know that seems too pragmatic for this kind of crowd on this board. Even though I could not officially in good conscience join because I do not believe in the Papacy or the Marian dogmas, I would attend depending on the choices.
Like I said, too pragmatic for this crowd who sees it all in dark shades of black and white.

In my humble opinion (or not so humble as I am not blessed with a lot of humility), you can attend any church you want, even if oyu do not accept the teachings. You cannot (should not) be a member of that faith, however, if you do not accept them. You are more than welcome in the Catholic church where I attend. Unless you are Catholic, however, you cannot receive the sacraments, including communion. It does not eman that you cannot learn in our classes and attend the masses.

To answer the question of what is avialable in my town, here are the choices:

United Church of Christ ( have no idea what that is)
Baptist
Catholic
Episcopal
2 non denominationals
and a huge ‘indpendant charasmatic’ church that I wouldn’t go near for any reason.
there’s also a small ELCA church that I’m not interested in.

Thank you for your responses.

I would set up a meeting with the priest and talk to him. Explain to him that you are LCMS but you need a place to be spiritually fed. I would explain that you are not looking to enter the Church nor are you looking to cause trouble. I would think that as long as you are not disrupting classes or the mass, there is no problem with you being there.
