Looking for a Compilation of Latin Chants and Prayers

Hi,
New here and just trying to figure out where to post my question. I cannot see another more appropriate forum to start a new thread (i.e., new question) to start other than in this forum…so I guess I’ll start here. ( Admin, please feel free to move if I’ve missed the mark.)

My 90- year old stepfather is a very devote Catholic (so is my mom to a certain extent, but I don’t know anyone my devoted to the church than my step-dad.) He went into seminary school immediately following his graduation from HS but after a couple of years came to the realization that priesthood was not his calling. However, that decision did not diminish his devote faith…it actually might have strengthened it. He became a deacon for his church and to this day continues to say his rosary in Latin, reads Latin, and sometimes mumbles in Latin. (My kids got a little freaked out about that at first. "Mom, Papa is talking really weird. Is there something wrong with him?)

He is 90 and a general decline in health at that age is not unexpected but over the past year or two has taken a dramatic turn for the worse. We recently learned he has mesthomelioma. His physician candidly advised us that based on this week’s chest xray, Papa might have another 9 months – at best. He will soon be in hospice care.

I am asking is anyone can recommend a “best of collection” of prayers, chants, rosary, etc. in Latin on CD. I did see links here to sites with free MP3 downloads but it appeared most were organized as all chants, or only rosaries…I do not know Latin so it is kind of difficult to tell. I believe Papa would be comforted to listen to a compilation but I’m not certain which MP3 downloads would constitute a decent variation. I hope this makes sense. And, I hope someone can offer a suggestion. Thanks very much.

However, I cannot help but comment on the little support offered by members of this “Forums.Catholic.com” support group.

I belong to two totally unrelated support forums that utilize this same exchange format software program used here, and you know what? The members in those forums actually engage in emotional support, shared stories, and offer incredibly helpful resources.

Although I was raised in a very traditional Catholic home, I became what one might call a “fallen” Catholic. I was thinking and hoping that perhaps support I might find on this site might change my direction.

Wrong. Sorry, it does not. Only reinforces it.

The ZERO responses I’ve received, other than the efforts expended by Vico and Capt Crunch (thanks guys) serve only to reinforce my total skepticism. As far as I am concerned the Catholic church has become nothing more than a money “cur-ching” machine. A bit like Penn State. Cover-up and conceal child rape to protect a false image and ensure those dollars keep rolling in. I can hear those cash registers now…

All the faithful are struggling to be like Christ, and do fail at it. It is a lifelong struggle.

I figured that you wanted Latin Church prayers. If you are interested in the audio of the Byzantine Catholic Church there are recordings here in both English and Old Bulgarian (Slavonic).

I think your stepfather would appreciate a recording of the prayers of the Mass. You can download the full Mass here:

Let me know if you need help burning the recording onto a CD.

I also have recordings of the St. Michael prayer, the Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen), and some of the rosary prayers, which you are welcome to, if you want them for variety in your chant and prayer compilation.

Unfortunately, most of us on this site, and in the Church at large, lack the knowledge needed to help you, so you are not likely to get a flood of responses.

In addition to burning a CD or two, you might print out the prayers of the rosary, and follow along as you play the recording a few times, so that you could then attempt to pray the rosary yourself with your papa. I’m sure he would find that effort meaningful. (The three essential prayers of the rosary are fairly short: the Pater Noster, the Ave Maria and the Gloria Patri).

You both will be in my prayers.
 
I don’t know many resources to which to direct you, but after reading your most recent post, OP, I definitely feel compelled to tell you a few things.

My grandfather is struggling with Alzheimer’s and the way he speaks of the Church now somewhat scares me because I wonder if the Theological Virtue of Faith which is needed to save his soul is still there.

I will be praying for your father and that you find the resources you need and that you come back to the One True Church. I experience much isolation from my Catholic brothers and sisters and it does hurt to see their perceived indifference, but I still have a soul to save in spit of how they treat me or how seriously they take me. And so do you.

Keep in mind that our Lord had most people be indifferent to Him although the Holy Gospels do not necessarily make it seem like that until His Passion, but He still labored for our salvation tirelessly, with conviction, and motivation and above all, Charity. Try to keep that in mind as you find your way back home to Church.

I’ll pray a Pater, Ave, and Gloria Patri for your reversion.

PS: I just thought of something, on iTunes i have some recordings of Tomas Luis de Victoria’s Masses which are all in Latin and many of his motets are prayers (I have Veni Sancte Spiritus for 8 voices and O Magnum Mysterium and Ardens Est Cor Meum in addition to Missa O Quam Gloriosum, Missa O Magnum Mysterium, and my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE Missa Ascendens Christus in Altum). They are beautiful and help me during prayer and meditation. I even listen to them sometimes on my iPhone while at Adoration.

Thanks, Mike. This is wonderful. I know he will love it. I know how to burn to CD and I would love to add your recordings of the St. Michael prayer, the Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen), and some of the rosary prayers. My 18 year-old son is named Michael and I remember Papa telling Mike about St. Michael the Archangel when he was just a wee one. Papa was just learning how to use a computer then. He found a picture of St. Michael, spent hours trying to print it, and put it in a frame for my little boy. Papa used to say this prayer (causing my Mikey to wonder why Papa was talking like that.) If you could share, that would be wonderful. Thank you so much. I feel so bad coming off for sounding so sharp. Please accept my apologies.

My own father passed away from early onset Alzheimer’s at the “young” age of 69. He was a wonderful family physician…one of the last of his kind. He delivered babies until doing so sent his malpractice insurance rates right through the ceiling. He went on patient house calls in the city of Detroit when house calls were unheard of…let alone going to “the inner city.” He made several doctor missionary visits to Mexico and Nicaragua on his own dime. He was devasted at age 62 when his physician privleges were revoked by his hospital because he was not keeping proper patient records. The signs were there, then.
I’ll tell you how I looked at the devastation of this disease back then and still to this day. I do not understand where this disease comes from or why or the cure or any of that. To me it was like this: For whatever reason his fine, beautiful and intelligent mind somehow made it to heaven before the shell of his body did…because in the last years that is what is was. His mind was no longer there; only a shell remained. And I knew his mind was in heaven just waiting for the rest of him to “catch up.” His death was a blessing because finally he was “whole” again. His mind was just hanging around in heaven patiently waiting to reunite with “the shell”. That is the only way I could accept it then and the only way I can think of it now.
Pay no attention to what your grandfather is saying. He cannot help it, he does not mean it and he won’t remember it tomorrow. If he is ranting against the church or whatever, he may be in the early stages of this horrible disease. My dad could not even wrap his mind around such thoughts the last couple of years. He was breathing but he was GONE. Brace yourself, girl, it gets much, much worse.
You are worried about saving his soul? Do not even go there. It is NOT him and he cannot help it, stop it or change it. Just love him.
I sincerely believe in angels. I’ll ask my dad to help your grandpa and you get through this as best as he can.

I was born in 1956 and attended Catholic schools until reaching high school. Every day started with daily Mass and Latin was the spoken year until when? When did the Catholic church eliminate Latin? I do not remember.
I do remember when Kellogg cereal introduced those “cereal in a box” containers and after making First Communion, we could not eat anything after midnight until we attended mass the next moring. So not only did we take our lunch boxes with P&J sandwiches and a piece of fruit, we also had to pack a cereal box to eat for breakfast after mass.
Wow. That seems like a milllion years ago but still I remember the poetic sound and a great many of the words. Thank you again.

I’m glad we could help. Thanks for your reminiscences of the Church of the 1960’s. It is interesting to hear about a time when Catholic life was more distinctively Catholic. My own memories only go back to the end of that decade. Latin was gone from the Mass by then, and the fast was down to an hour, so no little post-Mass cereal boxes for us.
