I set my DNS to auto block addresses… 208.67.220.123 and 208.67.222.123. And with the AdBlock extension for Chrome on, it takes care of some things.

Yes, K9 is great!
I also use the Adblock extension that is available for Chrome and Firefox. It means that no potentially dodgy images can be displayed in the form of advertising… though you can change the settings to allow adverts on safe sites that you wish to support by clicking on their sponsor links.

Norton are offering a free tool that will do this for your whole family, on all their devices. (not just your PC but iPhones / android devices games consoles etc.
It lets a parent ste parental controls targeted to each family memeber and define which registered devices those people can use.
Depending on the country you live in you may be able to get your ISP to do this for your broadband line into the house (most UK ISP’s have this as a free option) and / or your Router may have some ability to do this as well, or could be replaced with one which has that function.

Count another vote for K9, but be prepared to adjust the settings a bit. By default, it blocks things like YouTube, Google Image Search, and SSL (secure) connections to search engines.
Personally, I avoid Norton. Their free stuff is loaded with ads and constant reminders to “upgrade” to their paid products, and their paid products do nothing that isn’t done better by a free non-Norton product.

K9 web protection works very well for me, and it is free. It is also very configurable, and if it blocks a page that you didn’t want blocked, you can override with a password. Just make sure not to lose the password, because you need it if you want to uninstall or make any configuration changes.
You could also try OpenDNS, which works through a setting on your router, so that it filters your entire home network, not just one computer. It is also free.
However, no filtering software is perfect. It is especially very difficult for software to block objectionable content on sites where users can upload their own content, such as YouTube or photo sharing sites. It is much easier for software to block entire sites, such as porn sites. (But even then, it could possibly miss some sites.)
