Looking for a dynamic bible and study guide for my mom

My mom needs a large print bible that is easy to understand and also a good study guide that might also present the bible in a simple way for anyone to understand that is a novice in the ways of scripture.

I’m debating between the Jerusalem Bible and the RSV:CE. One Mother Angelica uses and the other the Pope/Church recommends.

I guess I would be more inclined to select the bible based on the best study guide for her.

Please let me know what you think or recommend?

You could also try and New American Bible, with the study bible aspect. This should have larger print, and may be easier for you to find in large print.

If she’s a Bible novice, I would not recommend the NAB. Even though it is recommended by the US Bishops, and even though it is the version we hear at Mass (more or less) all of the notes are not, in my opinion, conducive to the faith, especially for the novice.

I like what I’ve seen of the ORIGINAL 1966 Jerusalem Bible, and I’ve heard a lot of good things about it, including the the beauty and simplicity of the language and the helpful study notes. I don’t own one, however, because they are hard to find at a price within my Bible budget.

your mom may also have issues, as I do, with the weight of the book, which means I cannot use the Jerusalem bible, or the Catholic Study Bible, unless I am at a desk

the largest type available is the NAB Giant Type from St. Joseph, but it is heavy, at least for me. The notes are not on the same page, but at the end, so easily disregarded or consulted if you want them. By themselves the notes in any translation do not constitute a bible study.

One volume 8-10 week studies that come in journal form easy for individual or group use, are from Word Among Us, and some are tied to the liturgical seasons, some to books of the bible, to themes such as Spirit, Conversion etc, many to choose from.

If she wants a daily devotional-study based on the Mass readings, the monthly from Word Among Us has both, and the order of the Mass, for $34/year, and MIL finds this the easiest version to use and read

Saint Benedict Press recently released a large-print edition of the RSV-CE which you can find here in multiple cover editions. All editions include some maps, devotional material, and the Sunday Mass readings.

For beginner study guides I recommend the following:
Scott Hahn’s Pocket Guide to the Bible
Karl Schultz’s The How-to Book of the Bible: Everything You Need to Know But No One Ever Taught You
Come and See Catholic Bible Study Series (comes in multiple editions and topics)
