Due to recent health issues, I was advised by my doctor to limit my consumption of meat to only a couple of times a month. Thus, I feel that giving it up on Fridays for my Friday Penance is really no longer valid since I shouldn’t be eating it regardless of the Friday Penance.

So, I looking for other suggests what I can replace that with for my Friday Penance.

if there is any food or drink item that you absolutely must have every day, or almost every day, that would be a good place to start, because that would be a very good discipline.

Coffee? Pop? Television? Internet? Gossiping? Criticiing people?

(I’m not saying you participate in these last 2 - they’re just suggestions)!

BTW- the last 2 are one’s I’M working on, if it makes you feel any better! 🙂

The Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a good Friday penance. For extra spiritual benefits, pray it after receiving Holy Communion, or in front of the Blessed Sacrament at an Adoration chapel. 🙂

Thank you – that’s a good suggestion.
Never touch the stuff.
Had to give that up as well due to health reasons along with the meat.
Television?
Haven’t watched TV since my daughter was born. They tell me Seinfeld is no longer on the air. 😃
Internet?
Wouldn’t be able to pay the bills. Plus, as part of my stewardship to my parish, I built and maintain the Church & School websites. If I suddenly stopped doing them, I suspect some folks wouldn’t be too happy since they’ve come to depend on it.
Gossiping?
Don’t really talk with enough folks to gossip.
Criticiing people?
There’s something. 👍 Only on Fridays? 😃

Have you ever heard an organization ask you to donate
money to buy enough rice or beans to feed a family for a
month? Imagine being that family and thinking that this
is a blessing, eating rice and beans for a whole month.

How about eating rice and beans on Friday? Don’t fancy
it up any, just think of the people who are thankful for this.
I believe your heart will go out to the poor more-so than if
you had a fish feast that day.

Yea! An excellent organization to donate to is www.foodforthepoor.com

BTW, don’t you love how we’re planning your Friday’s for you, Sir Knight? And spending your money?😃

Yes, or you could set aside the money you would have spent for a nice Friday dinner into your Rice Bowl every Friday. Or purchase coupons every Friday from your local store or restaurant and add them. At Easter, bring the bowl to your priest and he can distribute the money or coupons to people in need.

Eat something you really hate…I do. I loath Fish! Ick! But I eat it on Fridays.😃

Would ministering the Holy Eucharist to the elderly and home bound on Fridays count for a “Friday Penance”?

I think that would be a wonderful Friday Penance. Anything that we do to recognize the sacrifice that He made for us. I think that bringing the Eucharist to others would be a great way to do this.

Penance doesn’t have to be something we hate, does it? I try to go to Mass every Friday and “count” that as a penance. But I love going to Mass.

Fasting on bread and water? I go to the bank daily for my business and I will sometimes not use the air conditioner and in the deep south that is a sacrifice with our heat and humidity!!🙂

Off topic here. How do you post with just parts of the quote hilighted/ Not too smart with all this computer stuff?
Hit the quote button on the lower right side. Delete what you don’t want. Write your reply. You can also copy and paste and add quote tags. Highlight what you pasted and hit the little picture that looks like a cartoon speech balloon. You can do several of these in one post.

Check out the Concierge Desk forum for more helpful hints. You can even practice in - I think it’s called - the Sandbox.
