Looking for a good book

I’m looking for recommendations for good reading material. I prefer action/adventure/history type books along the line of bernard cornwell’s histories or James Mitchner’s epics. I also like scary type books like Dean Koontz. I like Sci-fi that is more science than magic (fantasy) and mysteries are good too. I’d like to read something set in and around the church too.

But here’s the problem, I don’t want anything anti-catholic. By that I mean where the Church is all bad and all the hierarchy is evil and full of historical myths about the church. I also don’t like that the only ‘good’ catholics portrayed go against the church. And no graphic sex scenes. Liked Game of Thrones until it got pornographic so tossed that one out.

And no Romance Novels. UGH! the one genre I can’t stand at all.

Hopefully all the suggestions will be available on ebook for my kindle. But with the price of books I’m hoping to narrow my search a little with your recommendations. Thanks to all who offer me suggestions!👍

The link works. One of my favorite books was Two Years Before the Mast a true life " tall sails " sea adventure, circa 1840 U.S by Richard Henry Dana Jr. It is a classic. I also liked the Horatio Hornblower sea adventures by Admiral C.S. Forester. And I really enjoyed the Louis La’moure Westerns. You can check all these books out of your local library.

Although not a perfect match for your criteria, try Michael D. O’Brien’s Eclipse of the Sun. Even though this book is the second in a trilogy, O’Brien purposefully wrote it so that it may be read independently. (but after you read this, you will want to read his other novels too I suspect).

Good whodunnits set in the late Middle Ages in England: the Dame Frevisse (spelling?) series by my late good friend Margaret Frazier.

The heroine is a Benedictine abbess. These books are popular with people in religious life. (Evil gets it’s desserts.)

will look into that book because I also like the Horatio Hornblower books. Never ready any of L’Amoure’s books. Might take a look at them. thanks for the other thread I’ll check it out.
 
And don’t forget the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. And then there are several mysteries by G. K. Chersterton. He has his Father Brown Mysteries in 50 short stories, The Man Who Was Thursday, The Napoleon of Notting Hill, and the Club of Queer Trades. And then there is the Brother Cadfel mysteries. All good books.

Michael Crichton might be a good author to check out. I have read a couple of his books that were good. Maybe Stephen King. ‘The eyes of the dragon’ is a great book.
 
If you like historical fiction, I would highly recommend Stephen Lawhead’s books. My favourite of his is “Byzantium”. It takes place in the year 800 AD and it is about an Irish monk who embarks on a long journey to deliver the Book of Kells to the Byzantine emperor. It has a powerful message about faith and the futility of revenge.

Lawhead is a Christian author and his portrayal of the Middle Ages shows a time of amazing faith yet brutal violence. However, his descriptions are not overly graphic and there is there is little sexual content (unlike, say, with Ken Follett’s books). His “Celtic Crusades” trilogy is also very good, along with his “King Raven” trilogy. There are some corrupt clergy in these books but there are also good ones (much like it would have been in real life).
 
Author Louis de Wohl has written many novels about various saints. They’re very good. Available from Ignatius Press, or Amazon.

Let me second this recommendation! 👍👍

You might also enjoy James Patterson’s Detective Michael Bennett series. NYPD cop with 10 kids and a grandfather who’s a monsignor. Very Catholic-flavored with no “pot shots” at the Faith, but definitely “gritty”.
 
Read “Silence” by Shusaku Endo. A teriffic historical fiction novel set in Japan, during the persecutions of the fledgling Catholic Church with Jesuit missionaries centuries ago. Great thoughtful read.

I liked the Mars series by Kim Stanley Robinson, Red Mars, Green Mars , Blue Mars about terraforming Mars. I don’t recall a lot of sex in them though I’ve gotten quite adept at skipping parts of books I don’t want to read. I also enjoyed Harry Turtledoves’ alternative history Worldwar series, it took a while to get into it almost all of the first book introduces characters and explains the state of WWII at the time aliens arrive.

I’ve also enjoyed books by David Brin and Greg Bear. Also as suggested on another thread A Canticle for Liebowitz

Do you like figure skating?
 
Well it seems I’ve found a good book, Conclave by Greg Tobin. Very Catholic and yet it is respectful yet suspenseful.
 
I recommend the Shardlake series of historical mystery novels by C. J. Sansom set in the reign of Henry VIII in 16th century England.
