Looking for a name for the Gerasene Demoniac

Does church Tradition give a name to the demoniac who Christ cast the Legion out of into the pigs in Luke 8 and Mark 5?

I feel like I’ve been all over the place with my sins, and that Christ has brought them out of me like the legion of demons into the pigs, and am thinking of adopting this guy as my Confirmation saint this Easter if he has a name.

I’ve searched New Advent and it doesn’t say anything about him. Maybe there’s an early or local tradition about him though.

Try a good “Dictionary of Saints”, meaning, not an abridged version.
I believe I’ve seen a reference in there where it mentions this detail about him being the Gerasene demoniac.

Here’s some supporting idea from deeeeeep left field, perhaps you can explain this to your instructor, pastor, or Bishop’s office why this name appeals to you so much, offer supporting arguments, and pray that they it is God’s will that you get the name you so desperately want.

**First idea: **how about the name of Gerasene AS your confirmation name?
If Mary from Magdala’s name can be used as Mary Magdaline,
or The Magdaline or simply now a name such as Magdaline…that supports the idea of using the name of a place as your Confirmation Name.

Second supportive idea: It’s the same as asking the for the name “Bethany” to be one’s confirmation name…although Bethany was not a saint, Bethany was the place where “Jesus rested.”

Third supportive idea: Although St. Gemma Galgani’s baptizing minister was a against baptizing St. Gemma without “Gemma” being a saint’s name, he did it at the request of her parents who asked, (paraphrasing the conversation here:) “Well, arent their gems in heaven?” and the priest replied, “Yes, and with a name like that she will either be nothing or a saint.”

If the answer that comes back to your request is still “no” – and only after bringing this to the highest office I could – respect that obedience is a great sacrefice.

Final idea, and it also **may be a fourth supportive argument: **look at the scriptures of Tobit, and how the Archangel Raphael delivered him and his fiancee from a demon. Either the name Tobit or Raphael would be suitable, but I think you’re more leaning toward Tobit, the one who had been delivered from evil.

As a final alternative, you could look at the saints who are known to cast out demons in the name of Christ:

Please go to the book store and read the story of Padre Pio. He is well known for casting out demons.
I have a statue of him in my bedroom to keep me safe from demons. Please take the time to read his story.
 
Is there a hagiographer on these boards eho know of saints who have been tormented by demons and were subsequently delivered?

I can only think of Teresa of Avila, but I think the OP is looking for a male’s name.

In fact, something tickles my brain about an Irish saint who delivered a man from demons. The delivered man later followed the saint, and later became a saint himself. Can anyone help with this one?

**Probably the most famous was St. Anthony the Great. (Jan 17)

Many thanks for your many wonderful postings and ideas. I can’t find any evidence that any of the canonical saints was the Gerasene Demoniac, and it’s not specifically exorcism that’s the issue, as I wasn’t actually exorcised or possessed. It was more the symbolism of the multiple demons representing my life being all over the place, and the symbolism of the pigs rushing down the hill, that I was getting at.

Anyway, I appreciate your help, but I think I’ll go back to my previous choice of Athanasius as my patron. I certainly identify with the ‘contra mundum’ aspect of his thought life and preaching.

I don’t think that he is a saint, but I think that he was instructed by Christ to rejoin his society. Don’t think there’s any information after that.
