With the movie coming out it will only spur many debates around The DaVinci Code and I want to be well informed should I ever get into a debate on the topic. Initialy I wanted to read the book, but there are like 11 holds on the book when I look in the library (3 weeks per hold = 33 weeks) and I’d really rather not waste my money on it. Does anybody know of a site wich lays out all the claims made in the DaVinci code?

The Divinci Code is Blasphemy. It will be a good idea to talk to your Priest before you thought about reading it. Father Benedict who has many years of wisdom in the faith had a program devoted to discussion about this story. There are books on EWTN’s website such as the Divinci Hoax(and it is a hoax), as well as others. As a Catholic I would not reccomend the Divinci Code to anyone.

Although he is not Catholic, Dr. D.James Kennedy had a real good sermon and program tonite on TBN about all the lies and stretches of the truth of the book. He agrees that the book is anti-Christian, and has a book avaliable that explains all the lies and half-truths in the DaVinci Code. It is avaliable for a donation. He will also have a one hour special on in May sometime about the upcoming movie. Although I don’t agree with him on a lot of things, he is right on the money about the book, and all its lies about Christianity and its history.

I too am Catholic, and I am well aware of the nature of this book. However one cannot easily refute an argument he has never heard. I am looking into this book for the purpose of apologetics. Not for personal reading. In fact I don’t really want to read it. All I really want is a summary that lists the claims made by the Da Vinci code so that I can familiarize myself with its arguments.

Dismantling The Da Vinci Code

there are at least 3 active threads on this topic, and a couple of them have excellent links to sites giving you what you need, without having to bother with an (in my opinion) poorly written book. You don’t need to jump in a mud puddle to know how to get dirty, or how to deal with mud.

Thanks for the link SunShine!

What I am really looking for though is a comprehensive list, like;
  1. Mary Magdalene was Jesus’s wife and carried His son.
  2. The person to Jesus’s right in the painting of the last supper was Mary Magdalene.
ect.

The only claims I really know about are those. What I’m looking for is a basic list of what his claims are and if at all posible what he is basing his “facts” on.

It’s out in paperback–probably less than $15;

It’s a quick read;

It’s a work of fiction so it can hardly be considered basphemous;

You are ill-equipped to argue one way or another about something you have never read in its entirety because you lack detail and context;

I’m curious how you’ve arrived at a decision to argue it with anyone if you don’t know what it says…

I’ve concluded–after reading the book and entertaining the thoughts of those offended by it–that the hysteria is much ado about nothing. You should not fear the information that you need to decide for yourself what you think nor be willing to swallow someone else’s conclusions, much less defend them without any understanding of what you’re even saying.

Just pay 5 bucks for the paperback.

But if you want a review, here it is:

Characters with no substance run around impersonating Indiana Jones, and getting into situations that sweep you along pretty well until you realize that in this case, 2 + 2 = 6.

He has a right to write this, but it really was a lackluster book.

Sounds like the people who will tell you how to get rich if you buy their book.

Not any more so than Catholic Answers that has several books avaliable about the Da Vinci code.

this site has great resources for what you need, without having to see the movie or read the book, which would be a total waste of time and money, not to mention supporting and promoting heresy and attacks on all Christians. If this book and movie attacked Islam the world would be engulfed in jihad at once.

It’s based, whether Dan Brown says so or not, on Holy Blood Holy Grail, another heretical book which unfortunatly purports to being non-fiction.

Sounds like the same thing to me. If it’s a cause the contents of the book should be posted online for anyone to see. The people who buy debunking books are usually the ones who already beleive what they say and are looking for that to be reinforced.

Well, there ARE all those movies where the white square-jawed tough guy American action hero beats up on the snarling, mwahahaha-ing fang-toothed Middle Eastern terrorists. Hey, a new reason to boycott Arnold Shwarzenegger! 😃

Non-fiction just means it isn’t a story. It applies both to scholarly texts on books of opinions like political books.

Here is a link that will help in explaining the references made in the book to Opus Dei, etc.

I was using the word in this fashion.
fiction…something invented by the imagination or feigned;
therefore nonfiction…literature that is not fictional…not invented by the imagination or feigned.

Well, the definition of non-fiction can’t be compacted in a specific case because it fits an argument. From what I understand about the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail, non-fiction is a moniker which fits.
