Hello, everyone.

I was just wondering if anyone would be able to point me in the direction of a Syriac Maronite missal, preferably from before 1908. I’d appreciate any version pre-1973, though.

Thanks in advance.

Yes. If you ask because the Rabbula Gospels, amongst many other Syriac treasures are here, then I am unfortunately unable to gain access to the Rabbula Gospels since I’m not a researcher (although I did get to see many Peshitte and grammar books).

If you can manage to get to Rome, go to the Istituto Orientale (near Sta Maria Maggiore). You should be able to see some older printings of the Missal plus the Anaphorae Syriacae. Of course the Biblioteca Vaticana has all of them, but getting in there takes some doing (“pull” might be more appropriate).

Are you in Firenze for a stretch or just for a short-term stay?

What a shame. I was actually in Rome a couple weeks ago, and I made a trip to the library with my cousin who works there (i.e. Rome) and visited a Maronite priest who works in the CDF. I should’ve asked when I was there.

I won’t have time to go back since I return to NYC for good in 9 days (I’ve been here since August, I’m here a semester). Perhaps I can just ask my cousin to send me what you said should be available. Thank you.

Pleasure. 🙂 If you were going to be there a while, I was also going to suggest making contact with the OAM in Rome. I think they also might be able to help.

If you can obtain digitized copies of the old Missals or other Syro-Maronite books, please send me a PM. I am very interested in copies of any such CD-ROMs orDVDs. 😃

EDIT: one thing I forgot to mention is the Kaslik version of the ad experimentum liturgy from 1977 (or thereabouts). It’s all Syriac and is quite a bit better (read: more authentic) than the horrid Roman version or even the marginally better (than the Roman) Bkerké text.

If you can get this to work correctly, I’ve found a Java file of the Holy Qurbono from 1942 on archive.org. It worked less than often for me unfortunately, and I wish I could download it in PDF form.

That’s not actually the Ktobo d’Qourbono but rather the Ktobo d’Teshmesthé d’Rozé Qadishé which is the ritual of Sacraments. Yes, it’s from 1942 and is quite incredible. A phenomenal work of restoration. Sadly, it’s been negated by the ongoing and never-ending trend of Novus Ordo-inspired neo-latinization.

Alas, it seems this phenomenon will only change if the hierarchy finally change their minds. Maybe even after an overhaul of removing Latinizations as the Chaldean and Ukrainian churches have officially done on paper, they will still not be enacted for quite some time, either due to some hierarch or parish level decisions.

His Beatitude and the Holy Synod do not seem too concerned, but who can blame them with the existence of their people remaining in Lebanon and Syria hanging in the balance thanks to the continuing reign of Iran-supported militias and politics.

I could only wish for a situation where the problem was in the implementation.

Who can blame them? **I can blame them. ** They concern themselves with continuing to implement Novus Ordo-style neo-latinizations almost on a daily basis, but not with a an attempt to restore their own ethno-religious identity? What is this? There’s no chance to counter the evil influences you mention without that. 'ayb 'alayoun!

If and when the Latin Church effectively implements the “reform of the reform” that Pope Benedict has called for (and I myself have seen many positive trends in various parts of the world - in terms of more traditional elements being reintroduced into the Roman Rite)…do you think that will increase the chances of the Maronite Church removing what you call “Neo-Latinizations”? Do the Maronites in some sense “follow” the Latin Church’s lead in these matters? (Not that they should - just wondering what the reality is).

Despite the fact that Rome seems to be moving slowly towards it, I doubt any formal “reform of the reform” in the Latin church will make much difference to the Maronites. They’re hell-bent on pursuing their chosen path. The only thing that might stop the blood-letting is a direct intervention by Rome saying STOP THIS MADNESS RIGHT NOW! Other than than, I fear that we (meaning the Maronite Church) are doomed. 😦
