It is God’s endless love that raises Adam above all creatures. Genesis 2: 20. Love that beautiful is meant for sharing. Genesis 2:18. And so humankind began. Genesis 2: 23.

When we look for Adam, we find Eve. And regardless how one interprets her beginning, the key is that her nature, too, is in the image of the Creator. This definitive start of humankind insures all humans that God’s magnificent love is theirs. Genesis 1: 27-28.

We learn from Genesis 2: 16-17 that humans are not equal with God. And yet, they can participate in the life of God. This should not be a puzzlement. The obvious solution is that humans can freely love their Creator and demonstrate this love by choosing to live in free submission (obedience) to their Creator. CCC 1730. This loving obedience becomes the original friendship relationship between creature and Creator, between all humanity and Divinity. All humanity is in Adam “as one body of one man.” CCC 404. All humanity inherits Adam’s nature which is still in the image of God, even though history tells us that this nature was wounded by Adam’s choice to separate himself from God. The human person is worthy of profound respect.

The magnificent love story between God and humans continues. Genesis 3:15. CCC 410-411

With deep sadness in our hearts, we learn that Adam freely commits the Original Sin.

Genesis, chapter 3 usccb.org/bible/genesis/3
9
The Lord God then called to the man and asked him: Where are you?
10
He answered, “I heard You in the garden; but I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid.”
19
By the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread,
Until you return to the ground,
from which you were taken; For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.
There is no doubt that the internet is full of anger at this consequence of the Original Sin. Why? Why? Why? blurs the promise of reconciliation between humanity and Divinity.
Genesis, chapter 3 usccb.org/bible/genesis/3
15
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
They will strike at your head,
while you strike at their heel.
At the end of the day, all the why’s are replaced by God’s prediction of reconciliation.

**CCC 410 **After his fall, man was not abandoned by God. On the contrary, God calls him and in a mysterious way heralds the coming victory over evil and his restoration from his fall. This passage in Genesis is called the *Protoevangelium *(“first gospel”): the first announcement of the Messiah and Redeemer, of a battle between the serpent and the Woman, and of the final victory of a descendant of hers.
February 10, Ash Wednesday, is an important day.
