Hello my friends,

Hopefully this thread finds you well. I would like to get right to the point here and first of all say that I do not want this thread to become a religion bashing ego/ethnocentric one like many of the others have turned into. I am a sincere Catholic looking for sincere answers and sincere discussions of faith. I encourage all other sincere thread participants to post here as well, however if your ideas seem to suggest otherwise then I will kindly ask you to leave now and refrain from answering and participating in this thread. Thanks for being respectful and understanding that this forum is indeed one of discussion and learning.

:grouphug:

I would like this thread to pose as a question/answer one. I will start with a question, wait for answers, have a short discussion on that topic and then move onto another question and so on…The purpose is a thorough productive discussion that allows interfaith conversation and learning. I will post all of my questions in blue.

The first question I would like to pose to thread participating Muslims is as follows:

Do you as practicing Muslims believe in the concept of ‘Original Sin’? Do you feel that you carry within you the stain of original sin?

For better clarity I want to give you the definition of original sin and then allow you to answer.

Original Sin - MEANING., Original sin may be taken to mean: (I) the sin that Adam committed; (2) a consequence of this first sin, the hereditary stain with which we are born on account of our origin or descent from Adam. From the earliest times the latter sense of the word was more common, as may be seen by St. Augustine’s statement: “the deliberate sin of the First man is the cause of original sin” (De nupt. et concup., II, xxvi, 43). It is the hereditary stain that is dealt with here. As to the sin of Adam we have not to examine the circumstances in which it was committed nor to make the exegesis of the third chapter of Genesis. - Catholic Encyclopedia www.Catholic.com

Looking forward to hearing your answers!

May God Bless you and keep you in the palm of His hand. :hug3:

Muslims do not believe or accept the teaching of original sin. For that matter neither do jews.

It is a purely Christian teaching.

Muslims do not believe in Original Sin.
I concur that per (Quran 6:164):
"Say: What! shall I seek a Lord other than Allah? And He is the Lord of all things; and no soul earns (evil) but against itself, and no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another; then to your Lord is your return, so He will inform you of that in which you differed."

Thank you for your answers.

The next question is:

According to the Qur’an when you sin, you sin against yourself. We see that in the verse posted by Sam_777 in Quran 6:164. However there are a few unforgiveable sins that are directed at God himself and are offensive to God right? These would be blasphemy, idol worship, etc. Correct me if I am wrong please.

May God Bless you and keep you in the palm of His hand. :hug3:

The understanding of original sin is a bit hazy, I see original sin more as an inability to know God intimately rather than as a sin per se.

By eating the fruit of the tree, our parents sundered their intimate connection with God.

Hello my friends,

We believe every person born into this life, is born free of sin/blemish, it’s only their own actions in life that bring closer to God or takes them away from God’s Mercy.

With respect to Adam, the twelver shia believe is that Adam did not commit any sin by eating the apple, we believe God’s command not to eat the apple was presented to Adam as an advisory command. That is to say, God advised Adam not to eat from the apple or else he will come into harm. Adam’s decent from Heaven to the earth wasn’t a consequence of going against that advise either as it was God’s plan to create Adam and send him down as his representative on the earth in a dialogue with the Angels.

Qur’an 2:30 Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: “I will create a vicegerent on earth.” They said: “Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?- whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?” He said: “I know what ye know not.”

Thank you for your answers.

All sins are an offence to God because sins displease God. However, not all sins are equal, God may elect to forgive some sins even if a person did not explicitly repent for those sins, but with a person’s repentence and forgiveness seeking, then God forgives all sins including blasphemy, and idol worship. Many times in the Qur’an, sinners are reffered to as opressors even if the sin is against God and is not directed at other creatures. This is because when a person sins, they get in the way of their own salvation, as a result of that sin, they are opressing themselves by distancing themselves away from God’s Mercy.

Generally Allah forgives all sins except one in certain condition where you associate a partner(s) with Allah and you die before repenting then that sin is not forgiveable and you are in hell per (Quran 4:48):
Surely Allah does not forgive that anything should be associated with Him, and forgives what is besides that to whomsoever He pleases; and whoever associates anything with Allah, he devises indeed a great sin.

according to your defination for original sin , we believe that adam commited a sin then repented and be forgiven
and may be i believe that original sin story considered to be guidlines for our life which telling us that
1- satan our enemy
2- God gave us free will to follow him or satan (we can obey and we can disobay)
3- commiting a sin is a nature in our humanity , we should to strive hard against it and be aware of it’s consequences
4- God forgive sins

but am i responsible or share the responsability of this Adam’s sin ? no
everyone is responsible for his own sins

i agree with sam’s answer above
their are sins which lead to disbelieve ( associating others with God is critical issue )
some muslims allready with ignorance associated others with God , as for example those who pray to graves of rightious people . although they are muslims and worship one God , but with such acts they associating dead people to God in some attributes

Regarding #3 above, do Muslims believe that God created us with this “nature” or propensity to commit sin? If not, where do you believe it came from?

is it should to come from somewhere ?

Yes.

Either God created us with a natural propensity to sin or it came from somewhere else. That’s what I’m asking you (since you said that “commiting a sin is a nature in our humanity”) - do you (Muslims in general) believe God created us like that?

Infact it has its scriptural basis from the OT. I’m going to look for it first, 'cos I forget where exactly. I believe it’s taken from the Psalm that sounds like :" that I was even born as sinner "
(something like that). Just hold on…This is also a scriptural basis on " infant baptism".

But for the time being…let’s just hope I’ll find it.

OK. Do you have or does Islam offer any explanation as to why God would have created us like that - to have a propensity towards sin/evil?
why he created me as a man not woman , why he created me in poor family not wealth one
why he created me a human not an angel ?

i will deal with mattar as i find myself within it , all humans makes sins but the best of them those who repent and strive hard against it

i believe that humans are sinners because of sins they commited , not because the sin which Adam (pbuh) commited

Okay…I found it. This is the scriptural basis for the original sin which is taken from the OT, exactly Psalm 51; 5:
“surely I was sinful from birth”
or
taken from amplified bible:
5.Behold, I was brought forth in [a state of] iniquity; my mother was sinful who conceived me [and I too am sinful].

And that is the basis teaching of “infant baptism” as well.

Male vs. Female; Wealthy vs. Poor etc are not the same as Good vs. Evil. God is Good. He also proclaimed His creations “very good” (Genesis in the OT).

I was just curious if Islam had an explanation as to why they/you believe a Loving and Good God would create a propensity toward sin in His creation, particularly since God does not want us to sin.

(That’s part of what original sin is about for Catholics. We believe that Adam & Eve were created without sin, but obviously with free will. Through Adam & Eve’s fallen nature (resulting from the original sin - disobedience to God in the Garden of Eden) we inherit that propensity to sin.)

Actually according to the commentary for Quran 37:96, it states that Allah created us and whatever we make.

وَاللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمْ وَمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
Al-Jalalayn commentary:
when God created you and whatever you make?’, [whether it be] your act of carving and that which you have carved? So worship Him alone! (the mā [in wa-mā ta‘malūna, ‘and whatever you make’] is that of the verbal noun; but it is also said to introduce a relative clause, or it is adjectivally qualified).
