Looking for gift for friend about to be ordained to priesthood

My friend is getting ordained as a Diocesan Priest in two weeks. Since he is getting ordained for a diocese, he will likely either exclusively or almost exclusively celebrate the Novus Ordo, but he has respect for the TLM and I can see it as a possibility that he could celebrate it if people in his parish desire the Extraordinary Form.

With that said, I want to get him a Traditional gift, since I only go to the TLM if it is available, otherwise I will reluctantly go to an NO Mass and hope it is at least celebrated reverently. My initial thoughts were either a maniple or biretta. A biretta probably wouldn’t work since I don’t know his hat size and he might already have one. I don’t know if he will get much use out of a maniple, since although it is allowed in the Novus Ordo, I personally haven’t seen one used except in the TLM. It also might be a problem if it doesn’t match his vestments very well.

Does anyone have any ideas? As much as I would love to get him something like a monstrance or cope, I don’t have much money and I’m looking to spend under $50.
 
A gift doesn’t come with strings, generally.
Find out from his friends what supply house he favors and give him the cash towards whatever vestment he doesn’t receive as an outright gift.
He’ll use that his entire life.
 
You could always get him a rosary or some religious article such as that. Maybe a new stole or something. I’m not sure how personal of a gift you are looking for, because a gift card would be good as well as Clare said.

Perhaps you could get him a piece of artwork, a book, a statue, a chaplet, or a rosary. I’m sure any of those (or a combination of those) would go over well! 🙂
 
Do you have other friends you could go in with for the gift? That would give you the option of something more expensive. You might also check with his family to see if they have suggestions.
 
Come to think of it, a piece of artwork (even unframed) would be a lasting gift. No seminarian is without a rosary, and people give so many of those. I vote for something useful for Mass, maybe even an alb, you can’t have too many of those, or a gift card for quality black slacks.
Going in with others is certainly a great option as well.
 
He was a close friend of mine when we were in college together before he decided to go to the seminary. I am also considering a vocation to the priesthood or religious life and we frequently would discuss those types of things together, so I want to get him something “priestly” that he can use in his functions as a priest. A piece of artwork or a rosary just seems too generic.

If I can find a purple stole that he can use for Confessions, would that be a suitable gift? I would probably be looking for a used vintage one, due to my inclination to the TLM.

Sounds nice. You could get someone to make a custom one fro that…ask the ladies in the parish who sew. That person may even have one of those machines that can embroider the date or something on the inside. We just ordered one form California for one of our Deacons who just celebrated his 20th anniversary of ordination.
 
A statue of St. John Vianney, patron of parish priests, would be lovely.
 
Priests, even newly ordained ones, tend to have specific preferences, so I would ask him to pick out a stole and you purchase that. They can be expensive, so have a price range in mind, or better yet, give him a gift certificate for a church supplier. I would not recommend having someone make one, unless the priest has obtained a specific pattern and kit, and the talented person can definitely work with that.
