Looking for good clean fiction books to read

A new author, me, has two Catholic adventure books available for sale. I was motivated to write these two books when I couldn’t find any new good adventure/mystery stories that showed the Catholic faith in a good light. I like Debbie Macomber and Jodi Picoult. Macomber is a Christian, which shows through in some of her books, though not all. Picoult’s early work has some sexual suggestion, but her later stuff is clean (and better off without it – I get the sense a publisher pushed her into adding it).

Jodi Picoult’s “Change of Heart” had a BLATANT error regarding confession (one of her main characters was a priest) and when I wrote her and pointed it out, citing canon law and the CCC, she told me she’d had it checked by two priests and they said it was all right (not to mention the book was a complete rip-off of Stephen King’s “The Green Mile”!) Plus, the moral dilemma in her latest book, “Handle With Care”, has almost completely put me off her books.

Rumor Godden has written two excellent books, In This House of Brede, about a woman who joins a cloistered convent in England and Five for Sorrow, Ten for Joy, about a woman convicted of murder who converts and joins a religious order.

The World, the Flesh and Father Smith, by Bruce Marshall. This is an older book, available on Ebay, about a parish priest and his everyday life. It’s very good.

Any of the books in the Loyola Classics series:
The Edge of Sadness by Edwin O’Connor
The Keys of the Kingdom by A. J. Cronin
The Devil’s Advocate by Morris West
Cosmas, or the Love of God by Pierre de Calan

‘The Devil’s Advocate’ is an excellent book - has some slightly adult themes though (nothing remotely explicit, but possibly might not be to OP’s taste). Morris West also wrote ‘Shoes of the Fisherman’.

Dean Koontz is Catholic? I never knew that! I tried to read his works, but I find them incredibly dull. Not offensive, just dull.

That’s not to insult anyone who likes his stuff, different strokes,different folks!

Woah, I am surprised that this. The only Dean Koontz book I read scared me to death and I found it very disturbing. It still disturbs me to think of that book.

I’m on a reading kick and need some good clean fiction books to relax with. Any suggestions on titles or authors? Thanks!

Mary Stewart and her classic tales of romantic suspense and mystery. Start with the older ones like Nine Coaches Waiting and/or Madam, Will You Talk?

Great fun, colorful settings and memorable characters, with a clear moral sense.

And someone mentioned Dean Koontz. Yup, yup, yup, and please begin with his wonderful Odd Thomas series.

One Door Away From Heaven, also good, and try his new book, Breathless. There are many other wonderful books he’s written, but I need to know your level of tolerance for some scary things before recommending them en masse.

If you like kids’ books, The Borrowers! I’m just finishing the whole series.

Kon-Tiki: Across the Pacific in a Raft by Thor Heyerhadl isn’t fiction but it is really entertaining read and is one of my favorites. If you haven’t read it yet you should definitely pick it up. I have to second whoever suggested reading Evelyn Waugh. I think that I finished Brideshead Revisited in a day and could not put it down. It has to be one of the best Catholic novels ever written.
