Looking for information on papal statement regarding Mary.

I was told today about two statements alegedly made by the Pope regarding Mary, in encyclicals, that I’d like to find out if accurate and true or not.

The first concerns a statement made by a Pope to the effect that we go to the Son, Jesus, through Mary.

The second is to the effect that Marys suffering made up for what Jesus’ suffering lacked.

Now, I cant be any more accurate than that because the guy I was talking to, very anticatholic, was just throwing out this stuff left right and centre at me.

Can anyone figure out what hes referring to - are his claims correct?

I have quesitons about them but theres no point asking them yet if the claims he made are totally false.

Guyonthestreet, your friend said that we go to Jesus through Mary. What is it about this statement that bothers you? Do we not pray to Mary and ask her to speak to her Son for us? Is Mary not our interceptor.

I have no problem with intercessionary prayers. He seemed to be suggesting that the pope had said we could ONLY go to Jesus through Mary.

The more troubling one was the claim Mary’s suffering somehow made up for what Jesus’ suffering lacked.

He said they were in encyclicals but couldnt name which one.

That why Im initially suspect and holding off asking questions until I get to find out if what he claimed is true or not in the first place.

Well, of course you are right. Certainly we may go directly to the the Father and Son without going through Mary.

It would be interesting to know what he comes up with in naming the source of his comments. He is probably just making the whole thing up.

But, on the other hand, possibly someone more knowledgeable than me might supply you with an answer.

Will be interesting to see what response you may get. But, I would pressure your friend for his source. One cannot just make onhand remarks without supplying a source.:knight2::knight1:

I’ve not heard of such a statement compelling people to approach Jesus only through Mary. Rather, Mary is honored because it is through her that Jesus Christ entered the world as a person with a human nature. Jesus came to us through Mary - and this because Mary followed the will of God and not because of anything she merited by herself - and hence she was greatly blessed. But we are not compelled to seek Christ only through her. Rather, she is like a great sign post that points us to her Son.

Not in any sense materially different than in the manner that Paul spoke of in Col 1:24. Mary suffered along with Christ, and in that sense she was a participant in His passion, but not because Christ lacked anything at all. Rather, she suffered with Him because of her love for Him, and because of her decision to submit totally to the will of the Father.
