Looking For Mary

I am a cradle Catholic, went to Catholic school 8 years, pray the rosary, yet I feel I do not know much about the Blessed Virgin, nor do I feel close to her. I felt closer to her when I was in Catholic school when I was a child.

Today I was looking in the closet and found a book that used to be my mom’s called, “True Devotion To The Blessed Virgin Mary” by St. Louis Mary De Monfort revised edition 1950. Is this a good book, or are there other ones that may be better to start with?

I would appreciate any suggestion or readings.

This prayer may mean little to you, but this is how I came to wtire it years ago, when seeking relationship with Mary. As a Catholic newly returned, I found it difficult to approach Mary. I said to Jesus, “She is Your Mother, and You want us to love her. Please help me,” asking that He give me a birthday gift for her as the Church’s traditional Marian birthday was approaching. Nothing came. Finally, I said sadly “I give you myself, that’s all I have to give.” Then I went to the kitchen to write a family letter. Instead, I came to write ‘Dependence in prayer’ and this one. Next morning I read it and cried as I did each time that I prayed it for some while. It may as I said, mean less to you.

Woman of faith, pray for us
Dear Mother Mary, you have been honoured, blessed, and gifted by God. You are our mother because in figure of John, Jesus gave us to you as your children as He hung dying on the cross. We ask you to speak to God on our behalf.

It was through your faith that Jesus first manifested His power at Cana, thus beginning His work before the appointed time. Although it concerned neither life nor death, nor eternal salvation but the human feelings of others, He granted your trusting prayer.
Such was your faith, and God’s love for you, Saint of all saints!
Therefore, we trust all our prayer to Your faith in God!
You see everything that we need in service of God, and all that we desire for each other. You feel the aching of our hearts and hear our longing prayers. You behold our faith, our repentance, and our love.

Stand not silently by, Mother! Our Father, your Son, and the Holy Spirit who overshadowed you and blessed you with our Saviour—They cannot refuse you!

Please give us your unfailing protection, love and representation before God so that the fullest gifts and blessings are granted to each of us. We stand humbly before you, Mother, and entreat you with our hearts, minds, and spirits…

That is a good book, if a bit heavy for a beginner? But perhaps Mary herself, by hearing you ask her yourself how she would like you to approach her, may perhaps guide you. Perhaps, just talk naturally to her as your mother before you read the book or other books? (St. Marie Louis de Montfort was indeed deeply embued in Marian devotion and practice as a means to come closer to Jesus. Mary leads to Jesus.)

A lot of people have recommended this book on here. Like all books, it’s possibly not for everyone, but give it a go and see if it speaks to you.
 
If you’re close to Christ, you’re automatically close to Mary, because in the Gospels that’s where she was always to be found.

Keep praying to God that you would come to love and honor His Mother and do not give up on this. Someday, you will find the need of going to Her and asking Her to guide you to Jesus.

About more than 1/2 year ago, when I first heard about the Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary recommended by Saint Louis de Montfort, I wasn’t ready for it. I didn’t know much or understand much about it; however, I knew I would need Her. I just prayed and ask God and Her to help me with this trust. About 1/2 year later, some event happened to my life … I finally decided to read the True Devotion book …I also read “The Secret of the Rosary” by Saint Louis de Montfort. From there on, I’ve found peace and trust in going to Mary for everything. She leads all of us to Jesus.

It is true that where Jesus is … Mary is and vice versa.

When you are closer to Mary, She’ll take you closer to Jesus. There is no doubt about that.

I think it is a good book.

Also, things like this help.
 
St Bernard writes well on Mary as does St Dominic. For someone more recent, try St Maximillian Kolbe.
 
It’s a good book. I actually think St. Alphonsus Liguori’s book “Glories of Mary” is a better one to start with and then proceed to"True Devotion." The reason I say this is because St. Alphonsus explains the “why” behind the “what” really well and he puts it in the context of the liturgical life of the Church (using the Marian feast days of the year, etc.)

I can’t even joke sarcastically about this. 😛 It certainly IS a wonderful book; a little heavy but really you’ll understand it. My path to Mary began with Wisdom’s Fool, a biography of St. Louis de Montfort. I would HIGHLY recommend that. Then I read Secret of the Rosary, that is excellent as well, and very understandable. Then I read True Devotion. In any case, make sure you read that book sometime. 👍

I think it’s wonderful that you’re seeking to deepen your relationship with Mary. My prayers are with you!
 
Hi P4P 👋 Have you got a little statue of Our Lady in your home? This could help, too… in a more daily, visual sense. Having a statue of Our Lady or Our Lord, or the saints… is sort of like… having a treasured photograph of a loved one. You might soon find yourself placing little bouquets of flowers near the statue, etc., and in this way… foster a closer relationship with Our Blessed Mother. Hope this helps. God bless. 🙂
