It was not the lamanite that was destroyed by the lighter skinned characters but the lamanites who destroyed the nephites because of nephite wickedness. It became of the will of God because of nephite unrighteousness.

Such is my opinion about it all. 🙂
That is not the opinion of many to most LDS. And that is why I do not choose to associate with them in “real life” I agree that that is what happened at the end of the book. Terryl Givens is of the same mind as you on the subject. However, people get so bogged down with the racism of 95% of the book that they ignore that 5%. So far as I am concerned, what happened to the “Nephites” is what is happening to the LDS. Given the fact that the cultures are so similar. Simple consequence of racism.

So the Nephites were destroyed, leaving the Lamanites with their curse of dark skin and savagery, waiting long years until Whitey could return and restore them to their former white and delightsome state by converting them to the LDS faith.

Sorry, but that’s pretty racist.
😃 Such gentle sarcasm!! I love it.

Hi guys,

I find the discussion of racism to have become rather insulting, so I’m going to drop out of this thread. Sorry to abandon you, Carl, but I don’t trust myself not to get angry at people like Jerusha, who don’t contribute any information to the discussion, but rather just lob insulting opinions.

For anyone who is interested, though, John Tvedtnes has a good discussion of this issue here, in an article called “The Charge of ‘Racism’ in the Book of Mormon.”

Hi Mr. BDawg,

No need to be sorry 🙂

I do not feel you are abandoning me, ( on the contrary ) I admire the fact that you are not willing to participate when this " thread " seemingly has been reduced to " very personal and potentially harmfull words ".

For what it’s worth , I think the high road you have chosen speaks volumes and it is rarely an easy thing to do.

Thanks for all your (name removed by moderator)ut to my OP.

Look forward to seeing what you share on other threads.

God bless,
Carl

Thank you BDawg for that link. It confirmed what I already thought. 😉

I will give you a good advice. I have been debating on these boards (not just at CAF) a bit longer than you have been, and I know some tricks of the trade that you don’t! 😃 One of the secrets of successfully posting on these boards is knowing when not to reply to someone. Very often it happens that the best answer that you can give to someone is to not answer them at all. In those situations, any other answer you give is going to be the wrong answer, and will put you at a disadvantage. Unfortunately it is not possible to lay down rules for when to do that. It is something that you learn to do by intuition. A lot of the people to whom you have given lengthy replies I personally would have ignored, and would not have replied to at all. Jerusha is someone to whom I don’t think I have ever replied. I may have done so once or twice when I first came here; but I don’t recall that I did. Nowadays of course I don’t even bother to read her posts, nevermind replying to them; which suits me very well. I don’t have the time to read all the posts in a thread, and it is nice to have a way of quickly weeding out all the trash before wasting any time on them.

I wouldn’t call it a curse. We need to remember that the civilization was already hundreds of years old by the end of the book. The gentiles were often warned by the nephite prophets to clean up their act. And according to the lds, it was god who chose to preserve the lamanite seed and destroy the nephites. No mormon that I know sees racism in the book of mormon. What they do see is two civilizations battling it out with the lamanites coming out on top because of nephite wickedness.

The critics get bogged down with the ‘racism’ in the book but not the lds. As I have said, the nephites are destroyed and the gentiles of the future are warned. If JS or someone else wrote the book, he definitely did not have the whites as a righteous lot. Just the opposite. And this would have been quite revolutionary at that time considering many protestants considered the Indians nothing more than bloodthirsty savages who should be destroyed and of course, this is what happened during the Indian Wars.

whyme, the BoM is a product of its day. A time where the white Europeans could not fathom the idea that the brown savages were intelligent enough to build sophisticated civilizations.

The story in the BoM is a reflection of that belief. The white Nephites built the civilizations, the brown Lamanites were savages, loathsome and lazy.

How is it that God preserved the savages and the Nephites died? That is the story of the BoM.

Mormons now take the view of our times. Which is better, but it doesn’t change the origins of the BoM.
