I have recently moved here from TX and unfortunately there seem to be a lot of difference in how churches are here. I am a convert so I may speak from ignorance but my wife and I are struggling with the fact that no one seems to kneel at any point during mass. some churches here have all kinds of “new” lay ministries like “ministers of movement” (perform liturgical dance  ) or life teen and we really are concerned since we still have kids at home that we are trying to bring up in our new faith. we just can’t seem to find a church here that does mass or even religious education in anything resembling what we have been taught. does anyone here know of any options? (we live in the evergreen area)

From what I have heard from people who drive into the City regularly for Mass, you may need to look north a little bit to find a reverent parish. 😦 The good news is that on Sundays you can zip up to San Francisco and back without much traffic in your way! 😃

There is Saint Margaret Mary in Oakland, run by the very orthodox Institute of Christ the King, Sovereign Priest. stmargmaryoak.org/ (Tridentine)

And there’s the Dominican-run parish of St. Dominic’s in San Francisco: stdominics.org I sing and play the organ at the 11:30 Solemn Mass (Novus Ordo).

Both St. Margaret Mary and St. Dominic’s have Masses at good times for people with families. St. Margaret Mary’s Tridentine High Mass is at 12:30, and St. Dominic’s Solemn Novus Ordo is at 11:30. Plenty of time to feed them before Mass. 😃

I don’t know very much about the religious education program at either parish, but there are at least ten adults entering the Church this year through RCIA at St. Dominic’s, and they make a point of having the catechumens and candidates come to the Solemn Mass. IMHO, that’s a good sign. The other Masses at St. Dominic’s, while celebrated reverently, have music that is not… so solemn. It seems that the parish wants to introduce converts to the full liturgical patrimony of our Church (well, as much as they can through the Novus Ordo).

You might want to try Our Lady of Peace Church and Shrine located in Santa Clara. Priests only distribute the Blessed Sacrament. There website is www.olop-shrine.org
They also have a school and a wonderful parish store.

I don’t mean to hijack this thread, but I think the answer to my question might well answer the OP’s question as well.

Anybody know of a parish in San Jose with a solid (not touchy feely, not watered down) RCIA program?

Most looking for orthodoxy (not necessarily the TLM) go to Our Lady of Peace for both Mass and catechesis.

You could go across the Bay into Richmond, I found a nice parish up there visiting my brother without any of the hatred for Catholicism\piety that is prevelant in other parishes.
Take the BART and make it a nice Sunday outing, just call around. There is one parish I believe it is called St Josephs which is pretty nice.

God Bless
Scylla

Oops, I am sorry, I thought you were in San Fransisco, I should have paid more attention. Well if you ever head up north, try my advice.

Oratory of Our Mother of Perpetual Help is in Santa Clara, and run by the Institute of Christ the King. The address is

well we went to mass at OLP today and it was a good service. it was for the most part just like what we were used to in Texas with a few conservative “bumps” that seemed to fit. it was by the book novus ordo (word for word from the missal with full GIRM compliance and no ad libbing) which I wanted because as converts with kids the Latin, while beautiful is a bit hard to engage the family in right now. no hand holding during the lords prayer was new for us but understandable and okay. no altar girls was also new but okay. communion was distributed by two priests, one deacon and one EMHC who was a habited nun. they used a communion rail which was new but seemed to add an element of reverence. i did miss receiving the precious blood though. they used incense which I had only seen at special occasion masses in the past and that also added an element of reverence. overall I liked it. bit of a drive but i think worth it. the shrine is lovely and the perpetual adoration is nice. they have a well equipped parish library that was a pleasant surprise and a gift shop that rivals any catholic bookstore I’ve seen lately.

I highly recommend for those in the south bay seeking an English or Spanish mass with old fashioned reverence. (lots of kneeling an NO liturgical dancers 👍 )

How’d you like the statue? Beautiful isn’t it? Thousands can’t help but see it everyday during their commute.👍
