what I prefer, and MIL likes it because type is larger than Magnificat, is Word Among Us from wau.org

it is 5x8, fits in most purses, is a monthly, and you can buy a version with or without the daily readings, a meditation on the daily readings, and the order of the Mass, also has great themed articles each month, truly excellent. they will send free samples for your organization or parish (so will Magnificat).
I like the size of Magnificat, a bit smaller than Reader’s Digest, but need a bit larger type now.

I googled tampa catholic book and found several stores in your area or shop google has numerous online sources
There are stores in the city area, just not near where I live. The city is about 40 miles south of where I live…and about 15 miles south of where I work. I noticed one in Clearwater though…I should venture out there one day!

I also wonder if our parish could make suggestions. They often have book sales, etc…maybe they might have something like this.

I definitely will add magnificat to my favorites though…

I love wau.org! I read the mass readings and reflections, daily. DD loves it, too…she loves the way the reflections ‘put it all together,’ as she would say. 🙂 I didn’t know they had what I’m looking for on there…thanks annie! I’m going to order asap, because I’m tired of not being able to follow along in mass…

A while back, people here recommended the monthly Magnificat missal. I got a subscription and I just love it. 🙂
Magnificat is by far and away the best for this use. It is just an awesome publication. I even bought the leather binder for it. I don’t always use it but it is just perfect for what you want.

Let me put in a plug for “Living With Christ”. www.livingwithchrist.us It is about $22 for a year’s subscription. It is about 5x8 and fits easily in my purse. There are daily and Sunday Mass readings and a few articles and meditations (not as many as you would find in the Magnificat). There is usually a short biography of the saint who’s feast day it is.

I let my subscription run out last summer so I could try the Magnificat, but after a couple of weeks, I was sending off my check to re-subscribe to Living With Christ. Magnificat had more meditations and daily prayers, but I found the format somewhat cluttered and the meditations were very “deep”. I also found that I didn’t get to very many of the extras that Magnificat offered.

In the meantime, I have been printing out the daily Mass reading, but that is a PITA.

Just my experience. Your actual mileage may vary.

its new in the last couple of years in the edition that includes the reading and order of the Mass, they used to have the reflections and articles, and you could buy a one-volume Abide with Me that had the readings as well, and they also offered a very nice scripture journal. the new combined volume costs more but is so easy to use, and with it in your purse you always have a resource if you are able to drop into the adoration chapel. MIL loves it because of the large type, because she follows along with the daily Mass on EWTN since she can’t drive any more (son takes her on Sunday, but she still watches televised Mass later in the day).

they send free samples in a quantity for a whole class or parish, catechists take note

Magnificat also offers free samples, and it comes in an editition for children-Magnifikids (which I gift to all my grandchildren) and in Spanish, don’t know if WAU has Spanish

WAU also has great bible studies for individuals or groups, and great devotional books

I have WAU on a gift subscription, and the reason I would go back to Magnificat is if I were travelling more, like I used to, because it includes morning and evening prayer, saint of the day, and a meditation (similar to office of readings). For a one-volume travel prayer book it can’t be beat, and you can get either a vinyl or leather cover for it.

Can someone click this link and tell me if this would be a good purchase for what I’m looking for? Seems so from what I can tell. I marvel that this has been confusing.

annie–I can’t find the missal for sunday readings to purchase, in a small handheld book version on wau.org??
That’s the one that I have. It’s a bit big for your purse, unless you carry a big purse. Measures 6.5" x 4.5" and it’s about an inch thick. But other than the size, it’s perfect for what you want providing you only want Sunday readings.

For some reason, the parish I belong to, does not have the mass readings available within the misselettes. (that bugs me!) (they just have a snippit of the reading) I would like to follow along, and my kids like to follow along, as well. Sometimes, it is hard to hear the lector, for a variety of reasons, and this would be especially helpful for my family and me.

I see people carrying small daily mass reading books at mass…can you recommend any? I checked amazon and EWTN calatog, and can’t find anything.

Your help is appreciated. 🙂 Thanks!
As others have pointed out Magnificat might just be what you are looking for. But, I am going to be the voice of dissent here and tell you why I personally dislike Magnificat. It is basically the same problem I have with “missalettes” in general.

While it is very convenient to have a months worth or Readings and other prayers in a very nicely put together and very small booklet I strongly dislike the fact that it is disposable.

You use it for Mass and maybe the LOTH for a month and then you just toss it in the garbage. I just tend to think that something used for the Mass should have a little more permanence. That is why I am a big fan of hand Missals.

I can understand not wanting to invest in the Daily Roman Missal with the new Mass translation coming out (although this will still be quite usable for the Readings). But, there are other hand Missals out there.

I’m not personally familiar with that one but it looks like it would be exactly what you need.

As mammallama pointed out there is also the St. Joseph Sunday Missal.

Both of them are cheap enough as to not be a wasted purchase with the new Mass translation. You’ll most likely get a couple of years of use from it.

Does anyone know if there is any organization that collects the old missals, Magnificats, etc, and donates them? It would be nice to pass them on.
Thanks,

I think the local prison ministries of your diocese accepts them gladly. Call your diocese to find out their number.

I use the Saint Joseph Sunday Missal from Catholic Book Publishing.Bought it at Catholic store for $3.50 .Readings for Sunday only also has hymns and popular prayers, stations of the cross.4’x6’x 5/8’
I also recommend this missal.

You really can’t carry around the full set of readings (I,II,III and A/B cycles) and keep it small and lightweight-- hence the $90, 2000 page missals.
Well… sure you can - it’s the bible! LOL 😉 (Sorry Meg - I couldn’t resist!) Actually I have a very small bible with a list of the reading cycles in the back… trouble is the print is very small to use at Mass!)

To put in my two cents… I’ve been using Living With Christ and absolutely love it - I recommend it highly! I haven’t tried Magnificat but thanks to all of you who recommended it - I sent away for the sample issue. (Never hurts to shop around, right?)

I also wanted to mention… sometimes, even if I have the readings with me, I don’t follow along but rather just *listen *as they’re read. (The notable exception is during the psalms and antiphons where you really do need the missal if you want to keep up…) I find that sometimes I’m able to focus better that way and get at the heart of the message more than when I’m reading along. Am I the only one?

GREAT!!! Thank you so much for posting this link, Lee. I still need to get my 2008 one, lol…but since this has been harder than I would have imagined…I will get on the list for 2009!!😃

Ok…$34.95–Not sure if I’m being too picky, but isn’t this pricey? The one from Catholic Co is a bit cheaper. I hadn’t checked out The Mary Foundation yet…I wonder what their prices are like? Hmmm. Gonna have a look. (But, thank you Bee!)

looks fine, maybe too big for somepeople

for 2.95 you can get the St. Joseph Sunday missal for each year from Catholic Book publishing, about same size as Magnificat, but thicker of course, with order of the Mass and readings for Sundays and Holy Days, plus all the prayers for the day which some pocket versions don’t have.

I would hold off on buying any permanent Sunday missal until the publishers get all the newest changes in.

Thanks annie…I’m going to check out a few sites, like Mary Foundation, and also Catholic Book publishing that you recommend. I will let you know if I’m successful!
