Looking for Warm-Weather, traditional healthcare oriented Sisters =)

Hello all! I am currently thinking about perhaps following a religious vocation. I would like to find a community of Sisters that has the following characteristics:

-Healthcare (I want to practice as a nurse or a doctor hopefully)
-Warm weather (I come from AZ so I am looking for warm weather!)
-Habit required all of the time (I like the traditional habit)

I’m not sure if this is the appropriate way to go about this, but I am hoping to narrow done my search this way because I have been recently very overwhelmed by the large amount of communities, and I have been having a hard time fitting the criteria I mentioned above. I am in College studying for medical school hopefully. I also am studying spanish and could use that if needed!

Hello, Megan Rose. I love your name by the way. Megan is my oldest daughter and Rose was my mother. I don’t have any specific suggestions for you unfortunately, but I applaud your decision to investigate your call to the religious life. As I post this we are freezing here in upstate NY so I guess the Franciscans who staffed our local hospital are out of the question for you!
 
Missionaries of Charity – Mother Teresa founded this. Many of the countries in which they operate are quite hot! They wear habits too.
 
Try the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne, New York. They were founded by Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, the daughter of the great novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. She and her husband became Catholics, and after her husband and child died, she started to take care of people dying of cancer, and that led her to found the order. They have terminal care houses in warm and cold climates, but franky I doubt that they will guarantee you an assignment in a warm climate.

Since most of the day is spent in a convent and in a terminal care house, why should the climate be so important? It’s not like doing road maintenance!
 
I guess I wanted to be in warm weather because I am used to it but I suppose it doesn’t much matter now that I am realizing you’re inside most of the time anyway!

Is there a possibility for me to go to Medical School as well as get involved with the vocation process? When would I begin the discernment process?

Franciscan Missionaries of Healthcare!!!
They are in my home diocese of Baton Rouge!!
They run the hospital and it is very warm.
They wear the short veils and skirts though.
 
I like the idea of the long traditional habits because it really is a sign of your commitment to God, but of course if the community is a good one I’m not going to say “no”! =)

Servants of Mary, Ministers to the Sick

–They are based in Kansas City, KS. All of the sisters are nurses, and they are all habited.

Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus

–They train their sisters to be nurses. This is the order I am discerning with.

Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart

And I second someone earlier who mentioned the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne, NY. I strongly recommend checking them out. I would consider them if I wasn’t called to the Carmelites.

Also, I really don’t think you should limit yourself to orders that are in the warmer climates. I live in FL, and I’ve lived here all my life. I’m discerning with an order in Milwaukee, WI! A place that gets REALLY cold, but I have to go where God is calling me, or else I won’t be happy.

Something to think about is that religious life is all about breaking out of your comfort zone. If we did what suited us, nothing would change. God bless you for wanting to respond to His call. I will keep you in my prayers.

Also, if you don’t have one yet, definitely get yourself a spiritual director who can help you discern what order you are called to. The most helpful thing is that you figure out which spirituality you are called to. For me, it’s the Carmelites. I just mesh with their spirituality. It feels right. I knew that Benedictines were not right for me, earlier on in my discernment. Then you have orders like Sisters of Life and Sisters of Nazareth who belong to no specific spirituality (although Sisters of Life have a habit that very much resemble the Dominican Sisters of Nashville).

Well, I understand your desire for warm weather, but don’t let it be your only deciding factor (I know, I hate the cold, and I’m hoping to be moving to Michigan next year!)
Anyway, there are LOTS of medical orders, it all depends on what charism you feel drawn to.
Are you looking for something more contemplative? Try the Carmelites DCJ or the Alahambra Carmelites.
Are you looking for a community with medical doctors instead of nurses (although they have nurses too)? Try the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma (they currently have a number of Sisters in medical school.)
There’s also, Little Workers of the Sacred Heart in DC, The sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George, the Franciscan Sisters of Peoria, the Little Sisters of the Poor, and the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne. The Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matara are a missionary group, and a number of their Sisters are nurses around the world.
Just pray about it, look around, and most importantly, get a Spiritual Director. 🙂 That will help sort a lot of things out.

It’s funny! You mentioned every single order I discerned about before I realized God is calling me to the Carmelite DCJ Sisters, except for the Little Workers of the Sacred Heart! LOL!:eek: 👍 😃 😛
