Looking to buy a Prayer Rope/Chotki

In recent months, the Jesus Prayer has become a pretty regular part of my prayer life. I haven’t really formalized it, but rather just prayed it when inclined or at certain times such as when I go to bed.

With that premise, I’m going to try a bit of thread necromancy here and ask if anyone has any further recommendations on the purchase of a prayer rope. It is my understand that some do sell beaded prayer ropes in addition to knotted ones. Simply based on speculation, I would think the beaded one would be more comfortable to hold and might even last longer if made of a sturdy core and good quality beads.

Does anyone have thoughts on this?

Finally,. I would assume that these are treated as other sacramentals in the Catholic Church (e.g. Rosaries, Chaplets, Medals) in that they can be blessed and are to be handled in a certain way if they are.

Peace of Christ,

Not to resurrect an old(ish) thread, but I make prayer ropes if anyone is interested in buying one. 😃
I’ve been to your site and I think your work is beautiful. I have a question possibly only a woman would ask: are they washable? I don’t mean to toss in the machine, but if I drop it in the mud or something, can I wash it in the sink like other delicate things and let it dry? Or if it just gets wet will it dry thoroughly or will the knots stay wet and be weakened? Is this a ridiculous question?

Peace of Christ,
yes, you’re correct on their being blessed. I did get the chokti I bought from brother Phillip, blessed.

I’ve hand washed mine in the sink before. I’ve also accidentally run some of them through the washing machine. So yes, they are washable. 🙂 I don’t recommend running a prayer rope with wooden beads through the washing machine, but it is possible. I’d say it’s better to hand wash your ropes whenever they get messy. 👍

duly noted, and this pointer will be kept, for the sake of future instances. I know this wasn’t directed at me, but I found this helpful.

I keep forgetting mine in my pants pocket. My wife has washed my chotki many times. It is still is no worse for the wear. Very clean too.

peace

Oh good! It wasn’t that stupid a question. So, did it end up going through the dryer and that was okay or did you find it and lay it out? (And if that sounds dumb, I live in a really damp climate and knowing how to dry stuff is important.)

It has gone through the dryer only a few times. So far just fine.

peace

Well, so far I can’t get the people at chotkis.com to respond to my e-mail so I guess I’ll have to give it another shot. I admit that I am attracted to the look of the beaded rope much more than the knotted one. As long as it isn’t considered improper, that is the direction I would prefer to go at this time.

Thank you. I’ve been planning on giving myself one for my birthday this winter. Last time I planned to spend money on me my dog needed surgery! Hoping for the financial best this time!

I have purchased several chotkis and rosaries from user “Phillip Rolfes” here on CAF and they are works of art.

His website is themasterbeadsman.blogspot.com. Here are some of the ropes Phillip has made for me.

Tim and Pat,

Thank you for your kind words. I really don’t deserve them, but I am humbled by your kindness.

For folks interested in my little prayer ropes, check out my blog: themasterbeadsman.blogspot.com . There’s an “ordering info” page that tells you everything you need to know to order ropes from me. But be advised, I’m a little backed up with orders right now, so I’ve developed somewhat of a waiting list. 😊 I really wish I could whip these ropes out quicker because I’d love to see a prayer rope in the hands of every Eastern Catholic and Orthodox in the world. But alas, my tying progress is slower than molasses in winter.

In the past I’ve always found them and laid them out to dry. From what has been written above, however, it would seem that others have run them through the dryer. 😃

One thing I’ve done in the past is hand wash them in my bathroom sink using a special soap that my wife uses for her delicates. That seems to give the prayer ropes a very nice soft feel. The one I’m currently using (a 100 knot Romanian style rope) was initially rather stiff. Now, after three or four washings, it is nice and supple.

Woolite would probably work. If its good enough for cashmere, it ought to work on your prayer ropes pretty well.

Thank you. How long is the waiting list, anyway. Maybe if I want to do this in November, I should get on it now?
