Anathama Sit: Thank you for your reply. I will be joining your group.

I will ask, what are the differences in the Catechism and other resources that were mentioned. For instance, what is the difference in the printed Catechism (I have a personal copy) and Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church- The Council of Trent? I would imagine that the Compendium is a concise summary of the entire Catechism?

Also, I apprepriate the other websites mentioned. I will be referring to them also.

I also have a copy of the Catholicism for Dummies. I have read it and learned a great deal.
Greetings Jm060409,

I have gotten to the group and approved the membership. I am sorry that I was elsewhere when you responded to this thread.

JRKH did a fine job of answering the questions. However I would like to add that just because the new CCC came out, it does not replace or do away with the Catechism of Trent. Both Catechisms are helpful to have on hand. I personally enjoy reading the Catechism of Trent because of the langauge is superb and it brings more of the reverence and awe in of the Catholic faith. The new CCC is a needed and a great blessing to the Church. It takes what the former Church councils said and restates the doctrines and dogmas of the Catholic faith in a way that can be understood by the people of today. The doctrines and dogmas never change, but their expression may change.

Greetings JRKH,

Thank you so much for covering for me. I appreciate you being here and adding your wisdom to the forums.

God Bless You Both,
Anathama Sit

Another thing, and this may sound stupid, but, seriously, St. Joseph’s Baltemore Catechism 1 & 2. These books are for those first through…5th grade, maybe, but, though they are children’s books, they teach the Catholic faith in truth and simplicity.

JRKH: Could you expand on the differences between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern and Oriental Catholic Churches?

I am aware of the Orthodox church, is that what you mean by the Eastern Church?

Or is the Roman designation meant to reference the Latin Church, that grew out of Rome, and the Eastern Churches the churches that grew out of Egypt, India, Africa, and such? If so, what are the differences between the Roman Church and the Eastern churches? Are they comparable to various denominations in Protestant Churches (e.g.Southern Baptist Convention vs. National Baptist Convention). Meaning, that they are in more or less in union on beliefs, and are all Baptist, but are governed by separate entities?

I’ll try though I am not an expert in this area…

No - The Eastern Orthodox is not in communion with the Holy See in the Vatican (Rome). The Eastern Churches ARE in communion with with the Holy See.

This is a pretty fair description. The “Latin Rite” is often called the “Roman Church” because it grew out of this “Western Roman” empire.

No - the various rites are not comparable to protestant denominations since they are not doctrinally independent. There is no “more or less” about their doctrinal beliefs. All of the various rites and churches are doctrinally united with the Holy See in Rome.
Generally where they differ is in how the Sacraments are performed, liturgical language and cultural differences.
HERE is a brief description of the various rites and churches within the Catholic Church.

If I have made any errors above, I hope my good brothers and sisters here will correct me.

Peace
James
